Aqil takes Gauteng Maxterino title

Ten year old Ormonde, Johannesburg karting kid Aqil Alibhai wrapped up his 2017 season with a well-measured drive to clinch the Northern Regions under-12 primary school Maxterino championship at Vereeniging’s Laserfiche Raceway on Saturday, while also ending fourth in the under-13 Mini Max title chase with third on the day.

“I am so happy to be Gauteng Maxterino champion,” Aqil beamed. “It was a bit of a nerve-racking day — we arrived with a reasonable championship lead and decided that it was best to keep out of trouble and play the championship in response to the others — Jordan Brooks was my closest championship challenger, but I knew that even if he won, and if I came second to him every race, I would still beat him.

“We had a bit of a scare when I ended third behind Muhammed Wally and Jordan won race 1, but I was second in race 2 and Jordan ended fourth, leaving just the final and I followed him home in second in the last race. “I never won a race today, but we are 2017 Maxterino champions! “I also raced in Mini Max and we had a good run against the older guys to end up third for the day and I’m happy with fourth in that championship too.

Despite his tender age, Aqil has the benefit of a year of international karting behind him in 2016 and now he’s looking forward to the next two seasons, when he will be among the more experienced drivers in South Africa’s primary school karting classes.

“Many of my rivals will move up to bigger classes next year, but we also have a few hot kids coming up, so I can’t wait for the new challenge, but thanks so much to my dad and everyone else who makes it all possible to race and I am really proud and happy to have paid back their support with this championship.”
