Second round WP races set to thrill

The second round of the Western Province karting championship happens at the Killarney Kart Track Saturday 3 March and following the drama, upsets and excitement of the opening round, it should be expected that the sequel will dish up more of the same.

Perhaps the most exciting class in karting this year, Junior Max certainly proved the most dramatic and Charl Visser will no doubt be out to repeat his dominant performance last time out. Visser however lost his hard-earned points after an electronic technicality on his kart and needs to launch his comeback Saturday, but the lads who benefited from his issues will also be out to beat their slightly older rival. Rookie quintet, WP Mini Max champion Joseph Oelz (FA Kart), SA Maxterino champion Tate Bishop (TPB Kosmic), Sibo Solomon, Kai van Zijl (unlimited Auto CRG) and Troy Dolinschek are all capable of winning races. Should be wild!

One race that went to form last time out was the premier Rotax DD2 class, where reigning WP champion Umpie Swart (EMR Extreme CRG) stamped authority and repeated his victorious run in the GTi Challenge on the main circuit a week later. But his rookie teammate Jason Coetzee, Jonathan Thomas (Partners Hair CRG), Sebastian Boyd (Boyd Boss Kosmic) and Jarryd Evans will however be among those out to stem that Swart tide and Gary Lennon will be keen to repeat his Masters class win over the likes of Conor Hughes and Ernst Viljoen.

Andrew Rackstraw is another man who’s been on a winning streak on both the kart and main circuit of late and he will be after more of the same aboard his CRG in the Rotax Senior Max races. It won’t be all that easy however, if Jason Coetzee (SAKRA Kosmic), the ever-improving Reece Oellermann, Clubmans graduate Andrew Thomas, Ziyaad Ibrahim and karting lass Jade Lanfear have anything to do with it.

The Cape’s primary school classes are always a thrill to behold, but Mikhail Fernandez (SAKRA Kosmic) was a surprise 3-race winner in under-13 Mini Max last time out and fellow class rookies Joaquin de Oliveira (FA Kart), Kyle Visser (Charl Electric FA Kart), Andre le Riche (Kosmic) and CRG kids Lucas Royston and Kyle le Riche and Reza Levy will be out to stop him form repeating that success this time out.

2017 African Open winner Reese Koorzen (SAKRA Kosmic) appears to be the kid to beat in under-11 Micro Max. That will not stop Reza Levy (MonstaPop CRG), Joshua Smit, Ethan Stier, Paul Malcolm or little lady racer Mishca Williams from trying.

Kyle Visser (Charl Electric Zanardi) will be keen to repeat his Mini Rok domination over Jason MacBeath, Joaquin de Oliveira and Mischa Williams last time out, while Eric Norman, Ian Joubert and Luan Mostert will continue their fight in the under-8 Cadets, with Norman the kid to beat following his two-win-to-one success over Joubert in the season opener.

The Cape Clubmans races delivered some spectacular and dramatic racing last time out, but Worcester farmer Johan Hamman (Hammanshof Kosmic) will be keen to keep his karting return on a winning tack on Saturday. Andrew Thomas (Blake Bros) will have shaken himself off from his monster accident last race and he will be one among the likes of Robert Peche, Andre Steenkamp, Thomas, Mario Ras and Terry Watt chasing Hamman's Kosmic.

Racing starts just before noon with three heats per class, there is good food available at the Kart Café in the clubhouse in the pits and you can take it with salt that the racing will be exceptional across the board along with entertaining and informative commentary all in a cool atmosphere in the pits. Find the Killarney Kart Track at the end of the circuit’s southern entrance off Potsdam Road in Milnerton.
