Mokoena opens Rok season in style

Reigning South African Mini Rok champion Kwanda Mokoena started his 2018 MSA Academy Karting championship on a positive note with a fine fourth overall in spite of a chain failure in the first heat.  Paulshof karting star Mokoena bounced back to take a strong second in race 2 before crossing the line first in the final only to be docked a few seconds for a dislodged nose cone to drop him to second and come from behind to fourth overall for the day.

“It was a tough day but and I was very happy with my pace,” Kwanda explained. “Unfortunately I had a chain failure while running in third and retired from heat one. “That meant I had to start at the back in race 2, where I had a very good run to end up second. “I was bumped from behind and went off in race 3 and I went farming in swamps but I was determined not to give up so I made it back to the track and fought back to the front to cross the line first.

“Unfortunately my nose cone was loose after my rallycrossing and that means an automatic five-second penalty, which dropped us to second, but it was a very good day overall and I’m happy with fourth for the day in spite of our first race trouble — we drop that result anyway so it’s all good! Special thanks to my Squadra Corse team, my main man Thabs, my family and to everyone who help make it happen.”
