WP championship scores to be settled

Karting returns to Killarney for the third round of the 2018 Western Province Championships with the promise of more perhaps too close racing Saturday 7 April, just a week after the opening National Championship. The previous round of the WP series delivered explosive action, while several WP drivers will no doubt have either a point to prove after a successful run at the iDube national, or a score to settle if they had a tough weekend in KZN, but all eyes will be on the premier WP Rotax DD2 class after shenanigans there last time out.

Expect the fireworks to continue up front between SA Senior Max champion Luke Herring and WP DD2 champion Jurie Swart’s EMR Extreme CRG, with WP and SA WP Junior Max champions Jason Coetzee’s second EMR Extreme CRG, and Sebastian Boyd’s Boyd Boss Kosmic, Jonathan Thomas’ Partners Hair CRG and Jarryd Evans’ CRG all ready to pick up the pieces in the event of further drama between those two. Masters winner last time out Gary Lennon will meanwhile be out to keep his advantage over the likes of Roy Gruer, Conor Hughes and Ernst Viljoen.

Jason Coetzee will be out to continue his dominant form aboard his SAKRA Kosmic in Rotax Senior Max, but he will have Andrew Rackstraw (CRG) fresh from an Investchem Formula 1600 foray at Kyalami, Kosmic duo Storm Lanfear and Reece Oellermann, Clubmans graduate Andrew Thomas, the ever-improving Ziyaad Ibrahim and karting lass Jade Lanfear to keep him honest.

Expect action aplenty in the school kid classes, where the Visser brothers will be intent to maintain their iron grip on three of those classes.

Older brother Charl Visser is back from Italy via iDube and should remain the lad to beat in Rotax Junior Max aboard his Charl Electric FA Kart, but never underestimate new Killarney lap record holder Joseph Oelz (FA Kart) and Troy Dolinschek (Makita Kosmic), while Kai van Zijl, Simon Simpson-Heath and Tate Bishop all have race-winning potential and Sibo Solomon, Denis Joubert, Luca Wehrli and Thaqib Meyer are also all factors in a super competitive class.

Younger brother Kyle Visser (Charl Electric FA Kart) and Mikhail Fernandez (SAKRA Kosmic) will continue their fight in under-13 Rotax Mini Max, where Joaquin de Oliveira, the Le Riche brothers, Kyle and Andre and Lucas Royston are close enough to prove major factors. Kyle Visser is also the man to beat in the rival under-13 Mini Rok aboard his Zanardi, where Lucas Royston, Jason MacBeath. Mischa Williams, Joshua Smit and Joaquin de Oliveira are all out to topple him.

Reese Koorzen (SAKRA Kosmic) and Reza Levy (Monstapop CRG) are the kids to beat in under-11 Rotax Micro Max but Joshua Smit, Paul Malcolm, Ethan Stier and Mischa Williams are out to get those two.

Ian Joubert, Eric Norman and Luan Mostert can be expected to continue their fight up front in the Cadet karting kindergarten, with Rayan Karriem, Matthew Smit and Aaron Gallietti improving by the race.

Mario Ras and his CRG had control of the Cape Clubmen last time out, but Johan Hamman, Harry Georgiou, Jarred Jordan, Divan Myburgh and Robert Peche will be out for revenge this weekend.

Racing starts just before noon with three heats per class, there is good food available at the Kart Café in the clubhouse in the pits and you can take it with salt that the racing will be exceptional across the board along with entertaining and informative commentary all in a cool atmosphere in the pits. Find the Killarney Kart Track at the end of the circuit’s southern entrance off Potsdam Road in Milnerton.
