Alibhai stars in spite of Vaal drama

The second round of the Northern Regions Junior Max Karting Championships may not have gone his way at the Laserfiche Raceway in Vereeniging on Saturday, but Ormonde’s Aqil Alibhai came back home more than happy about his on-track performance. Alibhai came away as the surprise winner in the first round at Zwartkops a few months back and he was right up there all weekend, but a boisterous day in the high school class put paid to any podiums this weekend.

“I am loving being a threat to all my rivals,” Aqil, who is the youngest kid in the class this year pointed out. “Sometimes it’s a bit difficult and today was one of those days - I had a brilliant start to race 1 and went from 8th to second before leading the race, but Jayden Els made a tough move and we collided and we were both out. “Race two was a bit of a disaster because the chassis was bent and we did what we could to fix it, but race 3 was brilliant!

“I went from 15th to first, but Daniele Patrizi took a lunge at me on the second last corner and that put me onto the grass and I was way down. “I fought back to sixth - sadly my best result of a difficult day. “Overall we are very happy though — my kart is good and I am driving well, so let’s hope we have an easier job of it at the national here in Vereeniging in two weeks time. “We are ready — I can’t wait for that one!”
