Rookie Aqil in top form in Vereeniging

Ormonde rookie Aqil Alibhai continued to defy the odds with a fine third overall to leave his home Vereeniging national second in the South African under-15 Rotax Junior Max karting championship midway through the season. Alibhai took two hard-fought seconds and an unlucky fifth position in the three races to move into a championship second, quite some way ahead of the next-best rookie in the class.

“I am very happy with my weekend after all,” Aqil confirmed. “It could of been even better, but some of my rivals could not resist themselves in desperation in the last heat, but overall it was a good result. “I qualified third but lost out in the first lap melee and dropped back to seventh, so I had to fight back to second and then I started race 2 fifth and made steady progress to second. “The final was looking good again but I fell foul of that late race overtaking manoeuvre to drop back to fifth, but I did have the consolation of setting the fastest lap.

“We head to Cape Town next and we can be sure that those guys will be very strong at home, so we have a lot of hard work to do at RKT Racing if we want that championship but I’m definitely going to give it my best shot!”
