Tough street track unkind to Jonathan
Some weekends just do not go according to plan and that’s precisely what Cape Town driver Jonathan Aberdein had to deal with when the FIA Formula 3 championship visited the unyielding German Norisring street circuit over the weekend. Aberdein was quick in practice and qualified his Motopark Dallara-Volkswagen third in his group in a wet first qualifying to sit fifth on the grid for Saturday’s opening race, but his promising weekend turn nasty from there.
“I had a great start to the weekend and we were hoping for great things,” Jonathan rued. “Sadly I was taken out by a teammate in the first race and it all went wrong after that. “I fought back to 16th, but we struggled from there and only qualified 15th for race 2. “I made up a position in the race and we were 15th on the grid again in race 3, but a few cars came together ahead of me and I was trapped against the wall and ended up bending my suspension trying to miss the car stranded ahead.
“So nothing much to take home except for some great pace in testing — now we just need to turn that into results and happily we are done with the tricky street tracks and it’s only classic circuits from here on in. “That starts at Zandvoort on the beach in Holland in three weeks, where I have gone well in the past, so I can’t wait for the rest of the season!”
