A dominant day for young Coetzee

Durbanville karter Jason Coetzee came back satisfied from a busy weekend’s racing at Killarney’s fifth-round Western Province karting championships on Saturday. Coetzee was dominant in the top chain-drive Senior Max class with a pole position, fastest lap and three race wins to extend his championship lead, but his day aboard his Extreme team EMR CRG proved a somewhat more humbling experience.

“Wow — we had a really good day in Senior Max today!” Jason admitted. “The kart was perfect — I had a pretty simple job to put it on pole position and then drive off to three race wins — even though Andrew Rackstraw made me work for the second race win — and the fastest lap in each race, so thanks so much to my dad and the team for giving me the best kart on track. “We are ready for the Senior Max national in two weeks and I need another weekend like this to get my championship back on track there!

“DD2 was a bit more of a challenge — I qualified fourth, a tenth off pole and we had a really good race where I ended up fourth too and I was second in race 2 - that one was good — I came back from ninth, so it was a very good race. “Sadly the final came to nought after I retired from second, but we’ll drop that race at the end of the year and my main championship rival also hit trouble, so I’m still a close second in that chase, so all good and I’m ready for the national where I’m among eight karts within 30 points in the race for fourth!”
