Husqvarna’s Tennant takes MX double

Q4 Fuels Husqvarna Racing star Caleb Tennant scored a historic double 2018 TRP Distributors SA National Motocross Championship victory when he wrapped up both the MX1 and MX2 national titles at Saturday’s Krugersdorp’s Dirt Bronco finale. Teammate Maddy Malan meanwhile clinched a classic Husqvarna 1-2 in MX2 as he also climbed up a place to fifth in the MX1 final standings, while Niel van der Vyver ended up fourth in a tightly fought 65cc championship.

Tennant arrived at Dirt Bronco fresh off representing South Africa at the Motocross des Nations in the United States and promptly wrapped up the MX2 title in the first heat, before riding a controlled race to wrap up the MX1 title with fourth in the final. “I can’t believe it, but we’ve done it!” Caleb confirmed. “It’s been such a tough season and to win both premier South African motocross championships feels incredible!

“It hasn’t sunk in yet but I can’t thank my Q4 Husqvarna team and all my sponsors enough — this is such a tough sport and moments like this make it so worth it. “We wrapped the MX2 title up in the first moto, so I sat the second race out to concentrate on my last MX1 moto — I needed a top 10 to wrap the 450 championship up, so fourth was an easy ride in the end.”

Malan fought to the finish to clinch second in the MX2 title race by just a single point with a second race win. “We had a pretty good motocross year,” Maddy wrapped it up. “I had to work hard for that Q4 Fuels Husqvarna MX2 1-2 and I was happy to pick up a place to end up fifth in the championship after a tough year in MX1. “Huge props to my teammate Caleb on a brilliant double and I can’t thank my team enough — it’s been a great year with these fantastic guys!"

Q4 Fuels Husqvarna’s youngest motocross rider, Niel van der Vyver had a tough opening race in the 65cc class but bounced back in the second moto to end up fourth in a championship that saw the top four separated by all of 15 points. “We had a bit of an up and down day, but it was a tough year with in the championship with so many of us fighting it out,” Niel pointed out. “We worked hard and scored points in every moto through the year — thanks to my family and my awesome team for a brilliant season!"

“What an incredible result!” Husqvarna Motorcycles SA brand manager Fred Fensham concluded. “Q4 Husqvarna’s Caleb Tennant has sewn up a double MX1 and MX2 South African Championships, Maddy Malan made it a Q4 Husqvarna 1-2 in MX2 and Niel van der Vyver had a great rookie year to end up fourth in 65cc, so we salute all three of our riders and the whole Q4 Fuels Husqvarna team on a brilliant 2018 South African motocross season…”
