Massive Mike's Place series entry for Killarney

If the first races of the Mike's Place Engine Importers WP Clubmans Race Series two weeks back was anything to go by, the second round at the WP Wingfield Motors Power Series opener should be a cracker as a monster field comprising a few thrilling newcomers line up on the grid on Saturday 23rd February.

That last race provided extreme drama and excitement after a monster shunt stopped the action. That did not stop Niyaaz Modack making short work of it with a couple of wins in his Audi, but he is absent from Saturday’s entry list. That should see a tight battle up front between Class A regulars Danie van Niekerk’s Wingfield Motors BMW, Clint Rennard’s G+A Motorsport Golf 2 and Michael Le Sueur’s New Engineering Golf 1, but all of them will have a bit of the unknown to deal with too.

Not only will veteran Jess Huggett be back in his Weskaap Bakwerke Jetta and Alex Johnson returning in his Executive Decisions Audi A4, but GTC refugee Dayne Angel will be out in his Autohaus Angel Honda Civic Type R and Killarney darling Kosie Swanepoel will be out in his KSD Developments Lexus. Both of them will race in rookie Class X, so let’s see if they have the pace to trouble the Class A lot.

Class B was disturbed by that accident last time out, but that did not prevent Cody Alberts from bouncing back to win in his mom’s old Conferheur Engineering BMW, while Mansoor Parker has been burning the midnight oil to straighten his BMW after that contretemps last time out. Don’t underestimate his BMW teammate Anwar Levy, Wayne Wilson’s DTM Helderberg Nissan Maxima and VW tribe Paul Munnik (Audi VW Auto Clinic Golf 1), Riaan Swart (A1 Gutters Jetta) and Eugene Kruger (Durbanville Landscaping Golf).

Class C will see a straight BMW versus Volkswagen fight with the Bavarian brand represented by a quartet of 328is for Cape Town’s racing granddad Armien Levy (Jive), Ernest Roos (Van Niekerk Racing), JP Share (Coastal Hire) and Clifford Bacon. They will face off against Volksie gang, Brennon Green (Weskaap Bakwerke Golf 5), Francois van Tonder’s Universal Polo and Golf 1 trio, Anthony Carstens (Skylab), John Du Toit (Filkraft) and John Kirsten (G+A Motorsport).

Class D will see two Japanese cars taking on another horde of Volkswagens as Anton Jacobs’s Allscale Nissan Sentra and Cedric Burger's Italoven/Bossa Honda Ballade tackle the Jettas of Gary Smith Steven Gouws (Thermo Fire), Willie Swart (WFS Motors) and Sparky Camons and Golfs pedalled by Tony Leca and Jonathan Groenewald (Audi VW Auto Clinic).

Class E is a straight VW Golf shootout between Denver Benjamin’s Speed Precision Mk 2 and a trio of Mk 1s for Ruan van der Walt (Italoven), Brendan Moore (BM Packaging) and an exciting newcomer in the form of Formula Libre youngster Byron Mitchell (Wheel Collision/Dolphin Engineering).

Gilberto Nobrega in a Ford Ikon, Andre Johnson’s Executive Decisions Subaru STI and Gary Manwaring’s BMW will go mano-a-mano for Class F with another fleet of Volkswagens, including a trio of Golf 1s for up and coming racing lass Ciara van Niekerk (Wingfield Motors), Trystan Vercuiel and Ley Fielding and a trio of Polos handled by Brent van der Schyff (White Knuckle Adventures), Brendon Geldenhuys (GTech Office Solutions) and Willie Gouws (Thermo Fire).

The Mike's Place Clubmans classes race to lap time limits, which means if a driver laps too fast, he or she will be bumped up to the next class up for the rest of the year. That also means that newcomers or fresh car and driver combinations must race in Class X until their known pace can place them in the correct class and besides Dayne Angel and Kosie Swanepoel noted above, Saturday will also welcome a healthy batch of new cars and drivers to the series.

Stacy Wilson’s DTM Helderberg Nissan Maxima and Shane Angus Fraser Smith’s BMW 528i will bring a little extra Clubmans variety, while no less than six new Golf 1s will be out, including Clubmans stalwart Basie Burger in a new Italoven car, Peter Kannemeyer (Diamond Epoxy Coatings), Ryan Neil Large (Akwasol), Charl Opperman (Superior Air Brakes) and Raaziegh Harris (Harcraw Group).

The Mike's Place Clubmans are certain to add significant interest to a great day of season opening Cape Town racing at Killarney’s Wingfield Motors races. Gates open 07h30 Saturday 23 February and racing starts 10h00am. Entry is R80 for adults, R20 for under 16 and kids under 12 are free, with tickets available at the gate or via Computicket.

See you at Killarney!
