East London race season starts Saturday

East London race fans have a thrilling weekend of Border Motorsport to look forward to when the local season starts at the East London Grand Prix Circuit Saturday 2 March. And with a full day of Border Modified, Historic cars and Motorcycle action set to thrill, the season certainly seems set for a spectacular start

For 2019, the former Border Open Top class merges into the Border Modifieds to deliver a more diverse and interesting single race comprising a wider variety of quick machinery. Modifieds is run on a timed break-out with Class A cars limited to a best time of 1 minute 28 seconds around the East London Grand Prix Circuit, while Class B has a 1min 31 sec break-out, Class C 1min 35, D 1min 39, E 1min 43.00 and Class F must keep to 1min 47.00 and over.

That should see to a bumper grid with Bevan Scwartz likely the man to beat in his mighty Corvette alongside Modified regulars Shannon Barun (Mazda), Richard Clarke’s Civic, Quintin Lessing (Mitsibushi), and Shaun Gradwell’s BMW squaring up against Open Top refugees, Gary Marais and Bruce Butler’s Nardinis and a horde of Lotus 7s in the hands of Jeff Hall, Bruce Butler and Cherne Marais among others.

Don’t ignore Modified campaigners Craig Borges (Kadett), Bevan Choudree (Golf) and lady racers Ashton Nel (Golf) and Cherne Marais (Golf); Kean Barnard (BMW), Cameron Hall (BMW) and Andrew Karshagen (Golf), all of whom will want to get their seasons off to the best possible start.

The Border Historic Saloons will deliver their usual blast from the past spectacle with the likes of Darron and Alec Gudmanz and Danian Staffen’s Ford Capri Perana V8s taking on Mike Forsyth (Cobra), Derek Boys' V8 Chevy CanAm, Matthew Gudmanz (Mazda Rotary) and a field including Christopher Radloff (Toyota), Ford men Wayne Botha, Terence Lander, Quentin and Graham Lessing; Donavan Collins (Toyota) and Matthew Gudmanz (Datsun) among those entertaining in the smaller classes behind.

Two-wheeled action is always thrilling to behold on the high speed East London Grand Prix Circuit and to that end, the local Clubman, Unlimited and Supersport riders can be expected to fully entertain. Look forward to Bradley Rehse (Yamaha) taking on Kawasaki duo Travis Warne and Jason Lamb and Yamaha trio Gerrie Havenga, Bradley Rehse and Steven Bowie.

The perfect setting for a great day’s entertainment, the East London Grand Prix Circuit is situated at the end of Potters Pass off the R72 Settlers Way. Locals can purchase early bird tickets from the BMSC Office, at several outlets in the city or at the gate on raceday. Contact 043 736 4024, office@bmsc.co.za or visit bmsc.co.za for more. Sounds like a perfect excuse to go watch the racing!
