Killarney epic to open SA Endurance season

Cape Town race fans have some epic endurance racing to look forward to when the Campos 600 opens the 2019 Mopar South African Endurance Series at Killarney International Raceway Saturday 16 March. And with top class Campos 600 entries already streaming in as well as a fine supporting act of regular Cape Wingfield Power Tour highlights to look forward to, 16 March promises a great day of motor racing to cross off the diary right now.

Starting late Saturday afternoon, the Campos 600 will run over four hours into the night and if recent editions of this race and last year’s title fight are anything to go by, fans can look forward to more of the same — especially considering what that star-studded entry list already has to offer.

Local Cape team, Nick Adcock and Michael Jensen’s AidCall247 Rico Barlow Racing Ligier JS53 Evo Honda will be out to defend both their 2018 SA Endurance title and home honour, but that promises to be no easy task thanks to a Corvette V8-powered onslaught already confirmed from Craig Jarvis and SA F1600 champion Stuart White’s Maui Motorhomes Ginetta G57-Chevrolet V8 and former SA Endurance champions Francis Carruthers and Johan Engelbrecht’s glorious Aquila CR1.

Other leading Campos 600 sportscar competition will come in the form of 2018’s third-placed Fritz Kleynhans and James Forbes Comenius Ligier JS53 Evo Honda and Trevor Frost and Johannes Botma’s similar Strocam Mining Ligier, JS49 Honda. There’s also a healthy fight set for the smaller sportscar classes with the likes of Eric Salomon and Dave Sinclair’s Lessons ELF S06 Toyota, a couple of Nash MVW3-Volkswagens for Mega Pile pair Byron and John Oliver and Gavin Rooke and Brett Fleming, while Dean Wolson and Gerald will be back with their Wright Motorsport S2000 Opel.

GT cars make up an important facet of the Campos 600 and early entries already include former winners Charl and Harry Arangies' Stradale Motorsport Lamborghini Gallardo LP520 GT3 EVO and GT5 Backdraft-Lexus Roadsters including a factory entry for Brian Martin and Trevor Graham and a Bataleur Racing version for Mike Schmidt and Bruce Avern-Taplin. Steve Pickering will also be back alongside Andreas Letnick in the Classic Motorsport Porsche 910.

The SA Endurance championship would not be complete without saloon cars and tin-top champion Theo Van Vuuren will be back alongside Keegan Ward in the title-winning Alfa Romeo, Giulietta. They have some interesting competition in the form of GTC2 refugee and last year’s SA Endurance GT champion Dayne Angel sharing his Autohaus Angel Honda Civic Type R with Jarryd Evans, whose dad Brian Evans and Charles Arton will provide competition in their classic Cape Eye Laser Datsun 240Z, while Endurance regulars Steve Truter and Wayne Lotter will be running disturbance in their BMW M3.

Several other entries are still expected in good time before they close in a week, but with all of the above already confirmed, the Campos 600 promises to be a cracker. Add another round of the spectacular WP Burly Pro GTi Challenge, three Cape Superbike, Clubmans and Powersport motorcycle championship classes as well as races for the local Formula Libre, Millstock Classic and Shatterfix Fine Cars and Cape race fans certainly have a brilliant day’s racing to look forward to when the Campos 600 comes to town Saturday 16 March.
