Jason, Keegan in Dezzi Raceway top ten

The 2019 Falken Volkswagen Polo Cup kicked off at Port Shepstone’s tight, twisty and undulating Dezzi Raceway to deliver a fraught weekend full of action, drama and a long queue at the Clerk of the Course’s office late into Saturday evening. It was a weekend of up and down emotions for Campos brothers Jason and Keegan too, but both overcame the challenges at hand to end up in the top ten overall for the day.

Jason qualified his Turn 1 Insurance Polo fourth to go into the top six pole position shootout, where he went one better to start the first race in third, while Keegan just missed with seventh on the grid in his Campos Transport Polo. Jason was soon up to second, as he chased Jeffrey Kruger home in race 1, while Keegan dropped down after an incident, before bouncing back to end up fourth in the restarted race 2 with Jason ninth. Jason ended fifth for the day and Keegan ninth overall.

“Race 1 went really well and I soon had my Turn 1 Insurance Polo up to second and set the fastest lap while chasing after Jeff,” Jason explained. “I made a small mistake that allowed my rivals to close on me, so I had to run the remainder of the race from my mirrors, which also allowed Jeff to run away from us up front, but I was happy with second.

"Race 2 started just as well — I was up to third and Keegan and I set after Chris Shorter in the lead. “Sadly I suffered a bit of damage to the front left of the car, which meant I lost a position virtually every lap, but I managed to consolidate and bring it home eighth, which meant points in both races in what was a pretty good weekend, all considered."

Keegan enjoyed a slightly more challenging weekend: “I had a good start and managed to stay out of trouble in race 1,” the younger sibling pointed out. “I however found it difficult to overtake in the tight and twisty confines of Dezzi Raceway, but an opportunity finally arose and I attempted to pass a rival for fifth on the outside of turn 1. “That ended in disaster — the incident that followed damaged my brake line and I was forced to limp around for 2 laps to finish 16th.

“I started Race 2 on the front row and made a great start with my Campos Transport Polo to almost grab the lead into Turn 1, before chasing hard in second until the race was red flagged on lap 7. That meant it was a wild three-lap sprint after the restart and I finished second, but I was handed a two place penalty after contact with third placed driver to end up fourth in that race and ninth for the day.

"Overall it was a good weekend, having never driven around Dezzi before, so we are looking forward to the next round at Zwartkops on 6 April — bring it on — we can’t wait!"
