But can anyone beat the flying Fabi Tafani?

The 2019 V8 Masters championship thunders back to Killarney International Raceway Saturday 13 April following a long break since the series’ last race in February. The rest of the field will be squarely focussed on stopping Fabio Tafani’s unbeaten charge so far this season when the third round of the Wingfield Power Series descends on the Cape Town circuit, but matters are far closer in the Silver Class, as Harry Taylor, Charl van Sittert and Mike Brooks fight it out.

Tafani remains unbeaten overall and the Gold Class so far this season aboard his turquoise Mustang-like Ford V8-powered APV347 is with its distinctive dayglo orange GT stripes front to rear, but his rivals remain intent to stem his charge. The Johannesburg driver and one of several upcountry gentleman racers who prefer to do their racing in the Cape, however has no intention of relinquishing his advantage as he chases yet another V8 Masters title this year.

Mark Ridgway and Richard Schreuder sit closest to Tafani in the title race for drivers over 40 years of age, who also enjoy the social side of their racing and both of them will need to start pulling a little finger if they want to prevent former kart racer Fabio from running away up front. Another Jozi driver, Paolo Cavalieri — a former factory BMW Group 1 alongside Tony Viana in the early-‘80s meanwhile sits fourth in the chase following a steady season so far.

Tafani’s biggest challenge will however likely come in the form of fifth-placed man Sean Moore, who beat the championship leader to pole position last time out and he will be itching to make it count where it matters most in the races this time out. Brian Evans, Brad Hall and Rob Warrington are in the throes of another title battle for sixth, with Clinton Thorne chasing them.

Gauteng’s third V8 Masters racing representative, Campos racing family patron Rui will be looking for a little better luck this time out following a torrid weekend at the previous meeting, while Cape racing veteran Marcel Angel is one driver who has well proven he can beat Tafani in a straight dice. But will his busy work schedule allow him to make a maiden 2019 racing appearance this weekend?

Harry Taylor, Charl van Sittert and Mike Brooks have meanwhile all three won races in their fight for Silver Class honours so far this season, to see the the consistent Taylor leading double race winner van Stittert and Brooks by all of a handful of points, while Rhoderick Simpson is fast finding his feet close behind them.

The V8 Masters race identical 347kW V8-powered race cars developed by the late Owen Ashley to provide a thrilling equal playing field reserved for more mature drivers. The cars that look like Mustangs are in fact custom built racers and they compete mainly at Killarney in Cape Town, where the series is based in the new pits, but the series does travel to away races through the year too.

The thundering V8 Masters will race as part of a packed Killarney Power Series race meeting Saturday 13 April set to offer fans back-to-back action throughout the day - sounds like a most worthwhile entry into that diary….
