EP races set to thrill Saturday 13 April

Port Elizabeth race fans can look forward to local motor racing of the highest order, when the Aldo Scribante Racetrack hosts the third round of the Eastern Province regional championships on Saturday 13 April.

The action will be fraught at the head of the EP Modifieds grid, where the ever-dominant ex-production racing Audi S4s driven by brothers Silvio and Aldo Scribante and Nick Davidson have been coming under pressure of late and Duncan Lethbridge who impressed so last time out be back aboard his rapid Audi TT.

A little further back, Deon Slabbert will be doing a rain dance after a mighty showing in the wet with his Class B VW Polo last time out, but he will have the likes of Kevin Kelly’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evo chasing him down and looking for a little more luck, too, while Steve High promises that his Chev Cruize fuel pump problems are sorted to add another Class B force to be reckoned with. Watch for Rufus Neethling’s BMW in Class C, Stephan Aucamp’s BMW, Ian Roberts (VW Golf) and Marais Ellis in Class D, Daniel Bright in Class E and Wickus Basson Class F.

Brother and sister Ricardo (Yamaha 600) and Zante Otto (Yamaha 300) will be keen to show their EP Motorcycle rivals another clean pair of heels, but expect the likes of Yamaha 600 trio Ivor Vermaak, Regardt Koen and Paul Roelofse, who has been setting his fatest laps yet in testing; Honda 400 pair Chad Bilsbury and Ray Wood and Master rider Malcolm Burrows’ historics Suzuki to do their best to run interference, while Jessica Howden (Yamaha) will be chasing Zante in the 300s.

Gordon Nicholson's Nissan GT-R and Kean Barnard’s lightweight Lotus 7 made for a thrilling Laurel & Hardy Sports & GT scrap for the win last time out and both will be fighting it out again on Saturday. Add Syd Lippstreu's Celica, Patrick Hanly in another Seven and a good few other EP sportscar favourites to the mix and you will be in for some really good rapid racing.

AMSC Coastal Challenge Historic car action always conspires to entertain and Shaun Rudolph (Ford Escort), Deon Gouws (Opel Kadett GTE), Rane Berry (Datsun Skyline), Tony Lindeque (VW Jetta), Darryn Vice (Ford Anglia), Anton Ehlers (Ford Escort) and Andrew Greenland’s Alfasud can be among those expected to live up to that promise as usual.

You may well have seen among Aldo Scribante’s Street and Fine Car brigade on the PE school run through the week, but Saturday is race day and that’s what they will do. Tom Hugo (Nissan 370Z), Francois Wium (BMW), Neil Stephen (Datsun Skyline), Brent Watts and Riaan van Huyssteen are among the entries in that streetcar class — should be a hoot, as ever.

Long-term forecasts predict a balmy day at the races so why not mark off that diary, pack all the kit and head off to Aldo Scribante on Kyalami Road, Coega — that’s just off the N2 on the R335, on Saturday. Entry is R50 per adult and kids are free; good food and refreshments will be available and qualifying starts 8am, with three races per class from mid-morning.

See you at Aldo!
