A tough weekend at Killarney

Saturday’s Killarney Falken Polo Cup races proved a tough nut to crack for Campos Racing brothers Jason and Keegan. Younger brother Keegan bounced back from a tough qualifying to end fifth in the opening heat and then raced to 11th in race 2 for fifth overall as he drew even on points with brother Jason in fifth in the title chase. The weekend was however a disaster for Jason, who was eliminated from a race 1 crash after qualifying a fine fourth.

“That was a tough weekend, but it worked out for me in the end!” Campos Transport Polo pilot Keegan admitted. “I suppose importing SA’s W Series heroine Tasmin Pepper for the weekend to manage us has its advantages, but it did not start so well when I only qualified eleventh and gave myself a bit of a mountain to climb…

“The first race was wild and I managed to capitalise from a few of the front running guys dropping out, sadly Jason among them and then I just put my head down and went for it and ended up fifth. “I have to admit I was delighted with that, but that qualifying ghost came back in race 2 — I was caught up in a mad mid-pack battle and the red flag did not help as we were so bunched up in the second half, so I suppose 11th was OK.

“Somehow I ended up fifth overall and managed to draw even with Jason on points in fifth in the championship, so I suppose the weekend came to me in the end - thanks to everyone for their effort this weekend — now for PE in a month or so…

It was a weekend to forget for elder Turn 1 Insurance Polo brother Jason. “Qualifying went well — I got into the top six shootout, started fourth and was up to second by the end of first lap, but then it all went wrong. “I made a mistake and locked up into Turn 1 and tagged Bradley Liebenberg into a spin, so I knew I would be penalised and then a lap later I was caught out in Turn 3 and ended up in the wall. “That bent the front of my Polo’s chassis, so my weekend done too.

“I must apologise to Brad for that incident and to the team for wasting the weekend — that has also allowed Keegan to catch me in the title chase, but now we need to forget about this one and look ahead — see you in Port Elizabeth next month."
