V8s set to stir up Scribante action

Port Elizabeth’s Aldo Scribante racetrack is gearing up for yet another spectacular raceday with an extra dose of V8 thunder and another visiting party on Saturday 17 July. The V8-rich Super Value Foods meeting will see Willie Hepburn coming down from Johannesburg for his annual PE sojourn, joined by several V8s down from East London and up from the Cape against locals in similarly endowed machinery too in a day of V8 Challenge, Modified Saloon Car, Historic and Fine Car, Sports & GTs and Motorcycle action.

The highlight of the day will be a V8 allcomers race between the various so-powered machines competing in the EP Modified and Coastal Challenge races earlier in the day. That race headed by Willie Hepburn’s wild Sabat Opel Rekord that entertains today as brilliantly it did back in the ‘90s.

Willie will also be the star attraction and likely the car to beat in both the EP Modified Saloon and Historic car races, but he will have quite a lot to deal with on all sides, not least against local V8 entries in the Modified race — Rudolf de Vos’ mighty 'Little Chev' Can Am and Bevan Schwartz’ Corvette. That a V8 will win is no given though — they will also have to deal with Modified regulars, Scribante brothers Aldo, who leads the Class A title chase in 6th overall and Silvio’s Scribante Concrete Audi S4s, Bryn High’s similar S&K/Fuchs/Bright’s machine and Duncan Lethbridge (St. Francis Marine Audi TT) up front.

Behind them, a war will rage between the championship frontrunners, with Deon Slabbert’s Emerald Fire Polo Turboleading the Class B wrought in overall fifth in the title race ahead of Rufus Neethling and Gordon Nolan, but they will have the likes of Robin Spence (Subaru Forester), Kevin Kelly (Xtreme Projects Mitsubishi), Steve High (S&K/Fuchs/Brights Chevy Cruze) and the returning Ian Riddle (Mastercrete BMW) to deal with too.

Marais Ellis (Auto Magic BMW) leads Class C from 7th in the overall title chase over Johan Nel, but the real action sits in classes D, E and F, where Class D duo Stephan Aucamp (Injection Tech/A1 BMW) and Daniel Bright (Fuchs/Brights Golf 1) top the overall title table ahead of Class E man Wickus Basson (Shaun Benn BMW) and Class F racer Theo Scholtz. Jeff Guscott is the third in the Class D chase, while Derik Gows (BMW) and exciting newcomer, double-dating car and motorcycle racing lass Zante Otto (VW Motorsport/Fuchs/Polo) will keep Basson busy in Class E.

The V8 theme continues into the AMSC Coastal Challenge Historic Racing class, where the locals headed by Rudolf de Vos’ Little Chev V8 will be joined by the visiting Willie Hepburn’s V8 Rekord and a touring party of East London classics including V8s in Darren and Alex Gudmanz and Derek Boy's Capri Peranas and Cape Town Uitenbogaardt brothers Glen in a Corvette and Mark driving a Ford Falcon.

They will be joined by an East London gang including Brendan Smith (BMW 635 CSi) and Mathew Gudmanz (Datsun SSS) taking on local lot Shaun Rudolph (MR Escort), Deon Gouws (Kadett), Anton Ehlers (Escort), Darryn Vice (Anglia), Rane Berry (Capri) and Gordon Bennett (Rekord), among others in a truly classic confrontation.

The local Sports & GT race will be perked up by the arrival of PE hotshot Chassen Bright (Fuchs/Brights Motorsport) and East London lass Cherne Marais in a pair of Lotus 7s to take on Aldo regulars Gordon Nicholson (GT-R) and EP Lotus 7 quartet Ray Farnham, Kean Barnard, Patrick Hanly and Pikkie Marais, while the local Street and Fine Car race is always a hoot with a cool variety of cars from Linda Wium and Stuart Cornforth’s Minis to Nissan 350Z trio Tom Hugo, Justin Seale and Caryn Van Wyk’s, Francois Wium (BMW) Quinsley Sale (Atom) and Cherne Marais (Seven). And maybe even a farm bakkie.

There is great girl interest in the Algoa Motorcycle races with car and bike double Zante Otto (Yamaha) and Jessica Howden (Kawasaki) ready to show the boys the way with the lads represented by a quality field including Yamaha men Zante's brother Ricardo Ott, Cape visitor Kewyn Snyman and Ivor Vermaak, Historics riders Glen Elliott (Suzuki) and Malcolm Burrows (Suzuki).

Find the Aldo Scribante Race Track in the Coega IDZ just off the N2 in Markman, Port Elizabeth. There will be practice Friday 14 July with the racing starting mid-morning following warm-ups and qualifying Saturday. Entry fee is R50 per person and under-12s are free, there are full catering and bar facilities on site, so pack that cooler bag, the brolly, deck chairs and kids and head out to Aldo for a great day’s Super Value Foods racing Saturday 17 August.
