Cape Town to decide RX2 title too

The FIA World Rallycross Championship is not the only international series set for an epic title showdown at the 9-10 November Cape Town season finale. RX2 — the official World Rallycross support series also comes to a head as curtain raiser to the main race at Killarney International Raceway over the same, stunning race weekend.

The World Rallycross feeder series that sees all drivers racing identical 200kW all-wheel drive machinery on the same track as the main series, will see Swede Oliver Eriksson fighting it out with Finnish driver Jesse Kallio for the honour of the 2019 RX2 crown, along with the coveted prize of a World Rallycross Supercar drive next year. Kallio won the last round as he continued to surge back after a difficult start to his season.

There’s just as close a three-way fight for third between Norwegian Ben-Philip Gundersen, Jamaican driver Fraser McConnell and Finn Sami-Matti Trogen. Behind them, Latvia’s Vasiliy Gryazin sits a lonely sixth in the title race ahead of Swedes William Nilsson, Simon Olofsson and Anders Michalak, all in another close fight with Belgian Steve Volders.

RX2 presented by Cooper Tyres has criss-crossed Europe from Spain to Belgium, Great Britain, Norway and Sweden to France though 2019 and it now heads to Cape Town for a thrilling season finale and championship showdown. The racing so far in 2019 has been described as breathless, epic and action-packed from lights to flag every race and South African fans can now expect the very best of it as the title fight comes to a head at Killarney.

“The title race has been my main focus, but it’s not done yet,” championship leader Oliver Eriksson admitted. “The fight goes on to the season finale, where I am sure we are going to thrill the South African fans in Cape Town like never before – I cannot wait, it’s going to be an absolute blast both on and off the track!”

“I managed to beat Oliver head-to-head at the last race and my plan has to be to do that to take the title away from him,” Ben-Philip Gundersen threatened. “Things are coming good for us as we move on to South Africa after a tough start to our season and we are looking forward to a super-thrilling final instalment of this season’s title fight — bring it on!”

The RX2 championship showdown will share centre stage with the main event, which will see Swede Timmy Hansen and Norwegian Andreas Bakkerud continue their intense FIA World Rallycross title fight to the last turn of the season at Killarney.
