Harry turns up V8 Masters books

There was a splendid turn up for the books at Killarney’s V8 Masters on Saturday when Silver Class driver Harry Taylor (Wolfburn Single Malt) took his first series win in the second race of the day as he held off charging opening race winner Richard Schreuder (TRS Security) to take the second race honours by all of a tenth of a second. Schreuder meanwhile took the day overall to move into the Gold Class title lead, while Taylor played himself into the Silver Class title race.

Saturday’s grid, reserved for drivers over 40 years old racing identical Ford V8-powered Mustang-like machines, looked a little different from the norm with championship leader Fabio Tafani and the rest of the upcountry regulars attending a wedding, leaving Schreuder to take pole position from Marcel Angel (Autohaus Angel) driving a different car this weekend.  Silver Class star Harry Taylor was next up from Charles Arton and colourful as ever Rob Warrington.

Second Silver man Mike Brooks lined up sixth ahead of Silver trio Charl van Sittert (Serr Synergy), veteran Fanie Theron, Rhoderick Simpson, Brian Evans (Cape Eye Laser) and Gys van der Walt Silver duo.

Schreuder led the first race from lights to flag, but under pressure from Angel and Silver Class star Harry Taylor, Rob Warrington and second Silver man home, Mike Brooks. Brian Evans fought back to sixth, passing Silver driver Charl van Sittert on the final lap with Fanie Theron, Charles Arton, who fell back after a second lap slip, and Gys van der Walt next up.

There was drama early in the second race as Schreuder spun out of the lead at Turn 5 and plummeted down the order to eleventh as the field rumbled past to complete the first lap, with Angel leading Taylor, Warrington, Brooks and Arton. Schreuder had rocketed back to fifth by mid distance lap 4, when Angel ground to a halt, before Schreuder passed another car a lap to move into second with two to go as Warrington slipped back.

Schreuder gave it his all, but Taylor did just enough to hold him off to take the win by all of a tenth of a second, with Brooks holding a watching brief ahead of a splendid tussle resolved in Evans’ favour with Arton, Theron and van Sittert in close succession ahead of the delayed Warrington, Simpson and van der Walt.

Overall, Schreuder took the day’s win from Silver men Taylor and Brooks, Warrington, Evans and van Stittert, while Schreuder provisionally moves into the Gold Class lead ahead of the absent Tafani. Evans jumped to third ahead of Moore, Angel and Warrington, while Brooks holds on to a slender Silver Class lead over van Stittert and the charging Taylor.

V8 Masters now prepares for a blockbuster showdown and a full grid of cars for the 30 November season finale —  diarise that now!
