E36 Cup, 2-litres wow world title crowd
While the epic top billing SABAT Rallycross of South Africa held Cape Town rapt, the supporting cast of home-brewed South African RX also entertained at the Killarney International Raceway over the weekend. Three-litre rear-wheel drive E36 Cup BMW racers and two-litre front-wheel drive machines flew the South African flag with pride and went a long way to establish the local sport as more than worthwhile following going forward.
The wailing, drifting and yumping The E36 Cup races delivered great thrills and close, entertaining racing as; Robby Ferroli emerged just six-hundredths of a second clear of Zack Groenewald with Ryan Kat third after first qualifying, before Groenewald upped the stakes to lead the way overnight.
Kat then fought back to win Sunday morning‘s third qualifier from Groenewald, with Ferroli third, but it was Groenewald who pulled out all the stops in the final to win by an emphatic six seconds from surprise front-runner Clint Rennard, with Kat less than a second further in arrears. Ferroli finished fourth for the weekend, ahead of Smit and Dylan Nel.
In two-litre front-wheel drive action, Shawn Cope (Golf 1) served notice of his intentions as he topped the timesheets after Saturday’s first qualifying race ahead Steve Humble's Kadett and Craig Jarvis’ Peugeot, before Humble cleared off to a a seven seconds race 2 win from Gareth Easom (Golf 1) and Sandro Biccari (Kadett). Humble then took the third qualifying race honours Sunday morning by 3 seconds from Cope and Jarvis before Cope and Humble delivered a splendid paint-swapping duel in the final as Cope came good from a wildly understeering Humble and Biccari in the action-packed final.
Watch out for Killarney’s local WP RX meetings in future – if the weekend was anything to go by, that level of action is well worth taking an occasional afternoon out to enjoy through the race season.
