Rotax Max regional delivers great racing

The third round of the Western Cape Rotax Max Challenge karting championship delivered some stunning racing in spite of smaller fields than usual at Killarney on Saturday. With several drivers opting to rather travel to Pretoria to race the Northern Regions round in preparation for the all important Rotax Max National Double Header in two weeks time, there were also a few surprises.

Sebastian Boyd made no mistakes in the premier direct drive gearbox DD2 class as he stormed to three wins on the trot and it went even worse for main rival Jason Coetzee, who was second three times, but was excluded from the final heat for being underweight. That handed the overall second for the day to Masters winner Conor Hughes, while Jason Greyling held Andrew Thomas for third off, ahead of Jared Jordan, Robert Peche, Michael Jordan, Steven Beaumont, Coetzee and Roy Gruer.

The top chain drive Senior Max may have lacked in quantity, but it certainly delivered in quantity with a crack field and action on and off the track. The drama started in the first heat when winner Charl Visser was docked 5 seconds for a nose cone penalty to not only hand Tate Bishop the heat win, but overall honours for the day as the two of them shared out the remaining two wins, while Jason Coetzee and Andrew Rackstraw were in the thick of the action throughout.

Younger Visser brother Kyle made no mistakes in under-15 Junior Max as he stormed to a dominant three race victory to take the class ahead of a tight battle between Ethan Stier, Andre and Kyle le Riche, who shared out the second places between them. Matthew Wadeley was there or thereabouts through out the day, while Reza Levy used the weekend to acclimatise to the bigger kart in sixth.

There was a surprise in under-13 Mini Max as Joaquin de Oliveira made a triumphant return to Rotax karting with a two win to one overall win over Reza Levy. Behind them, Ethan Deacon was in charge of third place for the day, with Jordon Wadeley next up from Jude Stuart and Joshua Smit, who fought back to second in the final race after an inauspicious start to the day.

SA champion Reese Koorzen was once again in dominant form as he sped to a triple win to take under-11 Micro Max for the day ahead of Joshua Smit, who took two heats second to Jordon Wadeley’s one. Rookie Dale Hobbs made a strong impression en route to fourth ahead of Sabelo Ntuli, Keagan Beaumont and Bambino graduate Kai van Rensburg getting to grips with the bigger kart for the first time.

There was another turn up for the books in the baby Bambinos as Aiden Beaumont romped to a trio of wins over the usually dominant Kai van Rensburg. Sebastiano Human ended up third after sharing out the third places with Michael Danks, with Liam Wharton, Siyabonga Ntuli, Rebecca Wadeley and Zack McAuley next up.

The Cape’s karters now prepare for the big Rotax Max National Double Header at Zwartkops in Pretoria in two weeks time, before Killarney hosts the National Finals in mid October. Like the past weekends, it is expected that those two meetings will be run without spectators and to all lockdown and social distancing protocols.
