Giordano made to work for his first overall win

Giordano Lupini continued his fine comeback form with an albeit hard fought overall Class B victory aboard his Bullion IT Banhoek Chilli Oil Jetta in the third round of the cheapercars.co.za GTi Challenge at Killarney on Saturday. Lupini took a commanding second race win after missing out by all of 75-thousandths of a second in first heat, to close in on the class title lead despite missing the first round.

“We had to work for it today!” Giordano admitted. “The second race was great — I had a decent start off pole position after our first race lap record, but I had to fight back past a feisty Jaco Lambert who got away even better from the second row. “From there, I managed to get away and controlled the pace to bring it home for my first official Class B overall win!

“Qualifying and the first race were a bit more challenging, however. “Eden Thomson brought his A game this weekend and pipped me to pole. “Then I fluffed the start and had to fight back from fifth. “I managed to get back to second easily enough, but once I'd caught him, Eden had an answer for whatever I threw at him and he held me off to take the heat by 0.075 seconds. There was some consolation though, when I broke my own lap record again for a couple of bonus points.

“Best of all is, it seems that we have shaken up the Class B apple cart. “Eden’s pace was quicker than ever — he and his team have responded to our challenge, which will make our battle one of the talking points for the rest of the year. “That said, our own team has also enabled us to take the fight to the GTi champion, so hats off to Nian, Chase, Munier and the guys at NDT Racing for a fantastic Bullion IT Banhoek Jetta this weekend; and to our sponsors for making it all possible.

“We are also happy to be closing in on the top of the Class B title points table, which makes for great excitement in the lead up to the next round at Killarney on 5 June. Hopefully spectators will be allowed back at the races by then — we missed our fans again this weekend and we really and truly need everyone back at the races again!”
