Chemical Logistics star takes maiden GTC title

Chemical Logistics Racing Toyota star Robert Wolk is South Africa’s 2021 Global Touring Car Drivers champion, while Toyota is the GTC Manufacturers champion. The titles were confirmed after the 9 Hour at Kyalami due to race this coming weekend, was postponed to February and the GTC supporting races cancelled. Second Chemical Logistics Corolla driver Scott Temple ended third in the title chase and third team driver Julian van der Watt’s Autozone Focus was fifth.

“Wow, what an unexpected surprise,” Robert Wolk admitted on learning the news Tuesday evening. “It is a dream come true to be GTC champion and something we have been working at for several seasons. “It’s really been a high pressure year — we have led the way for most of the season and eked our championship advantage out a point at a time through a most interesting and strategic season.

“We may not have been the fastest combination every race, but we managed to out-point Michael van Rooyen over most weekends. “I have a brilliant team to thank for making it happen. “We worked so hard all season and our efforts paid off in the end. “What a feeling! “It's a pity we will not race at Kyalami — we had a good test there last week, so it was looking good. “But nothing can beat this championship winning feeling!”

“What a great moment to celebrate a brilliant and most deserved championship, never mind a fine third and a fifth too," Chemical Logistics team boss Ian Schofield confirmed. “Our entire team from champion Robert to Scott, Julian and Stuart, to every member of this well oiled squad worked so hard to make this season great for us. “We built up a title advantage against some tough rivals and were in the right place when an outside situation decided it. “Bravo one and all!"

“I'm delighted with third in the championship in effectively my maiden GTC season,” Scott Temple confirmed. “My Chemical Logistics Corolla was on point all year and I’m proud to contribute to a great result. “Congratulations Rob!” Julian van der Watt added: “I’m glad to have delivered a few crucial results to help my team to the title. “We kept Michael busy a few times when Robert won, and I stayed in the fight for third all the way. “Thanks and congratulations to my great team!”

“We are the champions!” WCT Engineering team manager Stuart Thompson concluded. “What more can I say? “I am truly proud to have lead three great drivers and a fantastic engineering team to land South Africa’s biggest racing title. Congratulations Rob, Scott and Julian and to our fearless leader Ian, never mind my guys - you all make me so proud. “Well done team!”
