Rachelle really enjoys a tough raceday

Rachelle du Plessis has had better karting days, but the Randfontein lass certainly enjoyed her penultimate Northern Regions outing at Zwartkops in spite of a difficult day at the office. Rachelle raced in both the DD2 gearbox and Senior Max classes on Saturday, each of which presented its own special challenges.

“I had such a bad day!” du Plessis rued. “We lost an engine on my DD2 kart in warm-up Saturday morning — my spare engine was good, but I just couldn’t keep up the pace I know I would have had. “Still I enjoyed a great racing with Luca Munorreto in the second and third races, which was great fun.

“Then in Senior Max I decided against using new rubber and fitted my Vereeniging race tyres for qualifying instead, which meant I was also a little off the pace there, but I had so much fun racing Erwin Sterne for fourth in the first and third heats, so by the end of the day, my troubles never really mattered because I had some really great dices.

“I must thank my dad and the team — my brother Rudolph and my friends Lee and Arno — for their hard work and support and getting that spare engine on and ready before qualifying. “Of course a very big thank you as always to Praga SA for assistance at the track and thanks to the Lord for the opportunity I have to do compete in the sport I love.”
