HRSA categories set to star at Zwartkops Passion for Speed

Historic Racing South Africa is quite literally marching on Pretoria for what is for all intents and purposes the jewel in the South African historic racing calendar’s crown. Postponed from its regular February date, the Zwartkops Raceway’s annual Passion for Speed Winter Edition has attracted a splendid entry and not least of all in the HRSA’s twin Sports, GT and Saloon Car, and Charlies SuperSpar Pursuit series races.

The Pre-90 Sports & GT action will see Peter Bailey out to make it three in a row in his purple 1974 Bailey Cars Porsche 911 RSR, but he will have a swarm of similar cars out to stop him. They include Fred Konig’s Northen Bolt & Nut RSR, Andre van der Merwe’s Evapco version, RDR man Richard de Roos and George Avvakoumides in Liqui-Moly colours.

Moving on the the Pre-‘80s Saloon Cars, big news is the arrival of Willie Hepburn’s EBC Sabat ‘Little Chev’ Firenza Can-Am V8 to take on those Porsches and PE visitor Rudolf de Vos in a similar machine in Class B. Another visitor, Franco Donadio will make the trip from the Cape with his wickedly fast Donadio Plant '74 Ford Escort to take on Class C Mazda rotary stalwarts, Johann Smith’s JMS Capella and Deon van Vuuren and Seef Fourie’s Hoosier R100s.

Volkswagen Sciroccos take on a literal liquorice allsorts in Class D where Stuart Konig’s Northen Bolt car, Andre ten Napel’s TNMC Medical machine and Jannie van Rooyen will have Djurk Venter’s Shelby SA '71 Ford Capri Perana, Sophos Pantazis in a 1969 Datsun 240Z, Mike O’Sullivan’s East Coast Classics '71 Chevy SS and Rene Jansen van Rensburg’s SvTech '76 Ford Escort to play with.

There will be another mixed bag in Class E, where Ian Kilburn’s Collectible Wheels and Tony Lundin’s Silvergaurd Datsun 1200 Coupes take on Riaan Roux and Dave Leyson’s Vpack and Addfin VW Sciroccos, Terence Lander's Hamilton’s Ford Capri and Ryan Budd's Leahcim '68 Ford Cortina MK2.

Class F is en main a Datsun versus Ford affair, with the Japanese brand represented by Sean Hepburn’s yellow Automoble Association 1200 Delux, Riaan Jacobs' Datsun Shop SSS and Andy Gossman’s AllWagen Sunny. It will be a family affair among the Fords though, with George, Charl and Derick Smalberger out in a gang of Shield and Sabertek Escorts, with Andre Dannhauser’s Pro Auto '75 Toyota SR5 Coupe and Cor Kraamwinkel’s '69 BMW 2002 running interference.

Class G will see 1965 Alfa Romeo Gulia GT Junior duo, Jan Jacobs’ Olifantsfontein Training car and John Simpson’s Evoke Realty machine fighting it out with Kirsten Venter’s Road to Race '68 Ford Escort.

Moving on to the Charlies Super Spar Pursuit races, Modified Fine class trio Wynand du Plessis Senior' DBM Architects Porsche 944 S2, Wernher Hartzenberg’s Air Cooled Wonders Porsche 916 and Willem van Niekerk Marauder MK3 will continue their championship battle in that back to front challenge series. Back to front because the slowest car starts first on handicap before the rest follow at intervals designed to see them all finish together. And that last lap is usually epic!

Rob van Aarle will be keen to avoid a double breakout as he did last time in his Ace Auto Datsun 180U. Pursuit racers get excluded if they lap too fast. The roses among the handicap thorns include Michelle Smith in a JMS Skyline, Althea Pretorius Carinvest Nissan Exa and Lauren van Aarle's returning Ace Auto Ford Escort. Stalwarts Kola de Klerk's Nissan 300ZX and Clive Winterstein Casheri 1957 Porsche 356A will be out against Hendrik van Zyl’s Evoke Realty Lotus 501 Elite.

The Trophy class sees a Mazda MX5 versus Porsche 944 dice as Bert van Aarle takes on Brad Schafer with a pair of Merceceds 190E’s in Andre Hattingh and Machiel Oberholzer’s hands and Frans Venter’s Datsun 280 ZX in pursuit. And the street car Fines class will see VW Scirocco duo Tegan Leyson’s Vpack car and Addfin man Riaan Roux up against Gerrit Murray's Alfa Romeo GTV and Van Rooyen Vision Porsche 924 pair Heinrich Norton and teenager Tihan van Rooyen.

Sadly spectators remain banned from sports, but the 2021 Passion for Speed will be live streamed throughout the 18 to 20 June weekend and you will be able to tune in via www.zwartkops.co.za or the circuit’s Facebook page.
