A Swiss championship win, drama for Motlekar in Italy

It’s been a mixed bag of results over the past weeks for Mozambican karter Ghazi Motlekar, who took a double win in the Swiss Junior Max karting championship a week ago, before a trying weekend in the Italian championship this past weekend. The South African Mini Max champion was unstoppable in the Swiss races, but was out of luck in the Italian round, both run at the Franciacorte track in Brescia Italy.

"The Swiss championship round last week was dreamy,” Ghazi explained. “I put it on pole and won both races, although I really had to work for it in the final, so we were pretty confident going into this past weekend’s Italian championship round against all the same rivals. “Being the quickest kart there, I was at a disadvantage when I had them all slipstreaming me in qualifying, so I came into the pits to get rid of them.

“Unfortunately that was a mistake and I was sent to the back of the grid. “Italian championship rules say we cannot come into the pits and go back out again, so I lost my time and had to start at the back. “I fought my way back up to finish eighth in the pre-final, but I was handed a 5-second nose cone penalty and started the final in 12th. "I overtook two or three karts in the first corner and another in the second, but the next guy closed the door and I went off and retired.

“It’s a pity because I set the quickest lap of the day and certainly had the pace to challenge for the win, but that’s racing! “I learned a few valuable lessons this weekend, but we have the pace and we’ll be back to fight another day. “Special thanks as always to my folks for this incredible opportunity and to Munaretto Performance for a perfect kart every session and all the support.”

Ghazi’s next appointment is an Italian championship round at Jesolo in two weeks time, followed by the second round of the European Junior Max championship in Adria at the end of the month.
