The South African Rotax Max Challenge is a national karting championship that’s proven the mainstay of the local sport for over two decades.
Comprising a four-round National championship season raced in Pretoria, Cape Town, Vereeniging and KwaZulu Natal to crown champions in the DD2 and DD2 Masters, Senior Max, high school Junior Max and primary school Mini and Micro Max, as well as two new for 2019 national level classes for under-9 Bambinos and over 85kg Max 175. The champions in the each class qualify to compete in the annual Rotax Max Grand Finals against the best kart racers in the world.
Rotax Max Challenge karting is also strong at a regional level with thriving Northern Regions, Western Cape and KZN championships for most Rotax classes, where points from four designated regional events also score towards each driver’s score in the overall South African Rotax Max Challenge series. There is also a strong Rotax Max presence in the Eastern Cape and Border, which enjoy a strong and growing following too.
Rotax Max Challenge hosts national championships for the following classes:
- DD2 is the most popular and fastest national class with for serious open-age group drivers older than 14 years old racing 125cc two-speed gearbox karts at an all-in weight of 175kg
- Masters runs the same chassis and engine as DD2 but at 180kg for drivers over 32 years old or younger drivers who weigh more than 85kg.
- Senior Max is for open age group drivers older than 13 racing the most powerful version of the Rotax Max water-cooled 125cc engine with a chain
- Junior Max runs a slightly detuned version of the Senior Max engine on a similar chassis for 12-15 year old high school kids
- Mini Max runs a further detuned version of the Rotax Max 125cc engine on a smaller chassis for 9-13 year old primary school kids
- Micro Max runs the Rotax Max 125cc engine in its lowest state of tune and caters for kids between 7 and 11 years old
- Bambino is the international entry level class for kids from 6 to 9 years old, but drivers can start racing at regional level; from five years old. Affordable and competitive, Bambino races the smallest kart chassis powered by controlled spec Comer 50cc engines. Bambino karting is a national champion ship class from 2019!
