KZN Max Challenge regionals deliver great action

The second round of the KwaZulu Natal Rotax Max Challenge karting championships delivered an entertaining day's action at the undulating iDube raceway in the hills of Camperdown on Sunday.

Rob Whiting continued to impress as he took the opening DD2 gearbox race from Masters men Jonathan Pieterse, Shane Foley and Alistair Mingay, while Bev van Heerde held Brandon Chetty and Chris Grobbelaar off for sixth. Pieterse and Foley then put one over Whiting in race 2 with the pursuers in the same order. But Rob restored the status quo over Jonathan and Shane in the final with Mingay fourth again, as Chetty beat van Heerde home.

Eric Marzoppi made no mistakes as he sped to triple Max Masters wins over Richard Horner in the first race, but Richard van Heerde took second in the other two heats to take the runner up slot for the day over Horner. Allan John Rice was fourth after a day long duel with Allan Johnston, Peter John Garbutt and Eddie Lloyd.

Riley Horner took the opening two Senior Max races from Jack Rowe, Nic Wuite, Daniela Marzoppi, Juandre Nel, Yifan Li, Nikheil Kulkaparsad and Kim Vaughan in race 1, and from Wuite, Marzoppi, Rowe, Nel, Li, Kulkaparsad and Vaughan in the second heat. But Wuite, Rowe, Marzoppi, Nel and Li ended up ahead of Horner, Kulkaparsad and Vaughan in the final, as Horner edged Wuite and Rowe overall as Daniela Marzoppi took the Driver of the Day award.

Troy Snyman was in imperious form in high school Junior Max, even beating all the Seniors in the first two races as Corban Spies and Maahir Wahab gave chase. Travis Mingay took under-13 Mini Max honours with two race wins. He beat Dylan Watkins, Travis Yeld and rapid upcountry third race winner Wian Boshoff, who went off under pressure at Thunderdome, to take the day.

Harry Rowe beat the ever-improving Kyle Spies two under-11 Micro Max wins to one, with Troy Pieterse third. Troy Pieterse beat Kayden Pistaur to baby Bambino honours, while in other action, Shrien Naidoo took the Shifter win from Scott Falconer, Brent Walden, Cody Sherratt, Richard van Heerde, Mauro Munari and the rest.

And Riley Horner took triple victories in a splendid trio of hugely popular 4 Stroke Sprint races from Jacques Pretorius, Eddie Lloyd, Lisa Mingay, Kyle and Andrew Nivison and a packed grid that delivered fraught and tight racing throughout the day.

There’s a lengthy gap to the third round of the KZN Max Challenge on Sunday 11 April, but the locals will be travelling to the Rotax Max National opener at Killarney in Cape Town opener before that on 27 March.
