SA Mini Max champion Ghazi's international karting campaign

South African Mini Max karting champion Ghazi Motlekar is limbering up to the season of his young life, as he prepares for a triple program of international races alongside an attack on the European and Italian Rotax Junior Max Challenge. Motlekar and his family have relocated to Italy to facilitate his racing dream and he will race on his maternal Mozambican licence.

“I am ready for the biggest year of my life,” Ghazi admitted. “We have moved to Italy, which is the centre of the karting universe. “I will be racing a full international program and we had a very good start at the Rotax Max Italia Test over the past weekend. I was comfortably quick and topped most of the sessions in Junior Max and now I cannot wait to race next weekend.”

Ghazi’s family opted to further his race career overseas following a difficult 2020 championship season, where they felt racially compromised by Motorsport South Africa. “It’s a long story, but we have now chosen to race in Europe,” Ghazi pointed out. “The Mozambican karting authorities are delighted to have me race under their flag — my mom is Mozambican and now I am proudly representing Mozambique on the world stage.

Ghazi will race in both the European and Italian Rotax Max Challenge, as well as represent Mozambique in the three 2021 FIA-CIK Academy rounds. He will also race the Rotax International trophy at Le Mans and aims to qualify for the 'Olympics of Karting' Rotax Max Grand Finals. That starts with the opening round Rotax Italia at Adria end March, two weeks before the Euro opener. From there it’s a packed four months around Europe and Italy.

Ghazi will race with the Munaretto Performance team run by Italo-South African karting family Mauro and Luca Munaretto in Europe  “I am going to give it my very best this season — I want to make my parents proud for believing in me and also to put Mozambique on the International karting map.”
