De Klerk swaps to BMW in Dullstroom as the Dakar prep continues

Fresh off his win in the Barberspan 300 Northern Regions off road race in the TreasuryOne Amarok last week, it’s all change for Hennie de Klerk as he swaps to his BMW X3 to compete in this weekend’s Dullstroom 400 SA National Cross Country Championship opener.

Satisfied with the performance of his 2018 Dakar Rookie winning Amarok, de Klerk has parked it to allow the team to completely refresh that car for Dakar 2022 Saudi Arabia.

“We have entered for the Dullstroom race, but it’s all change this weekend,” Hennie explained. “I will be racing our BMW X3 with new navigator, Werner Swiss because my regular co-driver Adriaan Roets is riding with Lance Trethewey this weekend. “It’s pretty exciting because I have not raced the BMW for many years, the car is right hand drive versus the Amarok’s left, and I will have a navigator I have not met before, reading the notes!

“So it's going to be an interesting race. “The main objective this weekend is to get some good seat time and to give the BMW a shakedown. “We will be using it for the rest of the year for practice in a few more regional races that are coming up, as well as one or two big ones, like the Toyota 1000 in Upington and the Kalahari Rally in September.

"After the Kalahari race, the BMW will be striped for parts for Dakar — we will be taking the dampers, gearbox and rear diff from the car. “There's a huge entry this weekend, so it should be a great race — perfect to rack up the racing miles in some really tough terrain."
