Zwartkops’ most popular race meeting confirmed for 18-20 June

Zwartkops Raceway has confirmed that the annual Passion for Speed Festival will go ahead as a Winter Edition from 18-20 June in a spectacular display of racing throughout the weekend at the Pretoria circuit. Originally scheduled for February, the event was postponed due to lockdown restrictions.

"We are delighted to confirm that our 2021 Passion for Speed will go ahead as the Winter Edition over the weekend of the 18th to 20th of June,” Zwartkops supremo Peter du Toit confirmed. “It will be a bumper weekend of the best racing as always and preparations are flat out to ensure the same celebration with wonderful interaction between cars, competitors, their cars and sponsors, and the public with the added twist of it being a mid-winter Festival for the first time.”

Borne out of the annual International Historic Series races when David Piper led an expedition of the finest sports, GT and other racing cars over the years, Passion for Speed the Winter Edition also celebrates a quarter century of the new Zwartkops Raceway, which was opened in 1986. The weekend has however evolved and will have a unique feel for 2021 with all the expected historic racing classes that festival fans have come to adore over the years.

The Passion for Speed TT will continue as the event’s premier attraction as it as usual caters for Le Mans Sports & GT, International Sports Prototypes and Pre’74 Trans Am cars, with each of those classes also racing on their own through the weekend. They will be backed by Zwartkops’ stunning regular Pre-1966 racing series, as well as races for Historic Racing South Africa and Midvaal Pre’80 Saloons, Historic Pursuit, HRSA Pre-’90 Sports and GTs and Historic Single Seaters too.

But that’s not all — not by any stretch of the imagination as several national, regional and club racing series join the fray with Extreme SuperCars, V8 Supercars, Formula Vee and Formula Ford Kent on the bill. Add BMW Car Club, VW Challenge and Lotus Challenge, 111/GT Sports & Saloons races for a truly spectacular weekend of racing backed up by some special demonstrations including a F1 car on track, Greats of the Past and other parades. How’s that for a show?

“The reason we postponed from our regular early February midsummer date for the first time this year was due to lockdown protocols,” Peter du Toit concluded. “It would have been impossible to comfortably run the event considering all the restrictions and appeals from our President at the time. “Now Passion for Speed 2021 is ready to roll and we can't wait to warm the cockles of racing hearts with our first Winter Edition.”
