A winter twist for Zwartkops’ annual festival of motorsport

Zwartkops’ Passion for Speed Winter Edition is all set and ready to race over the weekend of 18 to 20 June. And while this one has a certain midwinter twist to it, there's more than enough to entertain race fans via live streaming throughout the weekend.

There’s something for everyone too, from Pierluigi Martini’s 1989 Formula 1 Minardi M189 Cosworth to a field of historic single seaters, a splendid assortment of roaring of V8s from Mobil 1 V8 Supercars to listing and leaning ‘60s and ‘70s Legends of the 9 Hour Monsters, never mind giant-killing Historics to Extreme Supercars. There will be Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis and McLarens too and of course, yesterday’s heroes will all be out 'in anger' as always.

Among them, Sarel vd Merwe, Lee Thompson, Hennie Groenewald and Ollie Broome will thrill in the Legends of the 9 Hour V8 races, which will also be something of a family affair with the likes of Peter and Paige Lindenberg and Mark and Jonathan du Toit among the entries. Pablo Clark and his stable stable will be racing Ferraris, Willie Hepburn and Ben Morgenrood in what else, but V8s.

The G&H Transport Extreme SuperCars will give the photographers the chance to shoot images that kids can soon post on their bedroom walls, let alone extreme racing on track. And there’s something classic to thrill the when-we teenagers who once had posters of those cars on their walls! PE visitor Rudi De Vos' Basil van Rooyen tribute and other Li’l Chev Can Ams and BMW Batmobiles like Jody Scheckter and Ronnie Petersen raced at the ‘74 Kyalami 6 Hour will add more thunder.

Slightly younger race fans will be keen to follow the likes of Lee Thompson’s progress in the late Peter Gough’s resurrected Wesbank V8 Opel Astra. And they will be thrilled by the reappearance of Group N BMW Shadowlines and Opel Superbosses that Tony Viana, Mike Briggs and the gang once raced. Now back in action 30 years later!
Historic Racing South Africa’s Pre-90 Sports & GT and Pre-80 Saloons always make for spectacular action at the tight and twisty Pretoria racetrack — cars like Colin Green’s wheel-waving Ford Escort and Johann Smith and Deon van Vuuren’s wailing Mazda Rotaries among others, will give Peter Bailey, Andre van der Merwe, George Avvakoumides, Rui Campos and the rest of the league of nations Porsche 911 RSR brigade much to think about.

Another HRSA highlight is the back to front Charlies Superspar Pursuit handicap gang. They start apart and should finish all at once. Always makes for a thrilling climax! Also hugely entertaining are the Bridgestone BMW Car Club races, where monstrously powerful and devilishly quick Beemers of various shapes, sizes and ability do flat out battle.

And there’s much more too — watch this space for a full preview soon, strike the 18-20 June weekend off your diary right now and make sure the winter warmers are waiting on that couch. Tune in to experience all the action as it happens via the live streaming link on www.zwartkops.co.za throughout what promises to be a truly splendid South African celebration of the Passion for Speed.
