Alibhai improving at every British Ginetta Junior outing
South African lad Aqil Alibhai continues to make great progress as he learns the ropes through his rookie season in the Michelin British Ginetta Junior Championship. The double Rotax Max African Open karting champion opted to step up to the main circuit overseas as the Ginetta series allows him to race at just fourteen years old, rather than 15 as it is in SA. And while his campaign has been a baptism of fire, Alibhai is loving every minute as he learns the ropes.
“Racing the Ginetta Junior Championship has been an awesome experience so far,” Aqil admitted following his best result of the season so far at last weekend’s Oulton Park race. “I am doing loads of learning every time I go out in the car and twelfth overall and fifth among the rookies this last weekend is a great reward for our efforts. “It’s also incredible to race on the BTCC program, especially since the fans have come back and the tracks are packed with spectators.
“We have had a challenging time of it in the fraught Ginetta Junior mid pack though. “I've been involved in a few crashes caused by mid pack crises, but when we have stayed out of trouble, the results have been getting better. “But in all honestly it's all coming together in my first year on main circuit and we are happy with the progress. “Our plan is to race two season in this class, to learn this year and to chase the podiums in 2022. “We are on track.”
“The next meeting at Knockhill in Scotland next weekend has an extra race to make up for the one we lost when the meeting ran late last time. “I have a great team behind me in Breakell Racing and my dad in my corner and the plan is to do better again. “So I just cannot wait to get back in my Ginetta and make it happen — bring it on!"
