Another podium for Lupini at a foggy Killarney

Giordano Lupini scored his ninth Class B podium on the trot as he brought his Bullion IT Banhoek Chilli Oil Jetta 2 home third in a fog challenged cheapercars GTi Challenge race at Killarney on Saturday. With qualifying and the first race cancelled as thick fog refused to lift under high cloud until midday, Lupini ended up thousandths of a second adrift following in a race-long battle for second with Jaco Lambert after he fought back from a slow start.

“Today was one of those days we will put down to learning,” Giordano admitted. “We sat around all morning after our 8am qualifying and 10am race were both cancelled as we waited for the fog to lift before eventually racing one twelve lapper. “Jaco got a great start and I got it all wrong off my pole position inherited from our last race best lap and I was basically last by the time we got to turn 1. “So I had to fight back hard to third by the end of the second lap.

“Then there were yellow flags in two of my favourite passing places, by when my title rival Eden Thompson had already passed Jaco for the class lead. “I eventually found my way past Jaco, but I’d worked my tyres too hard and Jaco was driving brilliantly and he fought back, so Eden got away leaving us in a splendid dice for second. “I lost the rear and Jaco managed to pass me on the final lap and do what I may, he pipped me at the post.

“I’m not complaining about third, but it’s not what we wanted! “Days like this will only make me stronger — we have a long gap to the next race with something most exciting in between now and then, but we will also be concentrating on our race performance with the Bullion Banhoek Jetta — this wasn’t our best weekend, but we have a great team and we will fight back. "Thanks as always to Nian, Chase and the NDT team and to my dad and my sponsors for all the support.
