Class A, B and C Championship leaders Jurie ‘Umpie’ Swart, Eden Thompson and overall leader Kyle Wiltshire consolidated their respective www.cheapercars.co.za Western Cape GTi Challenge title advantages with sixth round race wins at Killarney on Saturday. It was a dramatic, yet thrilling day when qualifying and the first race were cancelled. Thick fog had refused to lift under high cloud until midday. To leave the action down to a single 12-lap race.

With qualifying cancelled for the second race in succession, the grid was set according to the previous race best laps. Which meant that Jason Coetzee topped the all Polo 6 Cup Class A grid in his Mint Wraps JC Coachworks Polo ahead of Umpie’ Swart’s Alpine Autohaus machine. Colin Meder Jr’s ITT car stood third alongside Dillon Joubert’s Powder Coating World TAC Steel Polo, rookie Kai van Zyl’s Unlimited Racing Angri car and Automan lad Marco Busi's Polo.

Class B rivals, Giordano Lupini’s Bullion IT Banhoek Chilli Oil Jetta 2 CLI and Eden Thompson’s MAD Somerset Refrigeration Polo 6 topped the Class B grid. Ian Kapp’s Hydracor Polo was third from Jaco Lambert’s TL Autocare Golf 1. Nadia Nair’s Polo Playa and Marc Thompson’s Somerset Refrigeration Polo Classic. Young guns, Tate Bishop’s Angri car and G&A kid Schalk Geldenhuys topped the all-Golf 1 Class C grid. Kyle Wiltshire stood third ahead of Matthew Rowe, Alfie van Zyl and Nathan Victor.

Coetzee led Class A away from Swart with Busi on a charge from the back and soon into the lead. Swart was having none of it and fought his way back ahead from Busi, Coetzee, Meder and van Zyl. Joubert went off on lap 2, as Swart also slipped back to fourth. That left Busi leading Swart and Meder. But Swart was quickly back to third and set off after Coetzee and Busi. He picked Jason off on lap 8 and Marco on lap 9. Swart then held on to win from Busi, Coetzee, Meder and van Zyl.

Lambert made another lightning start to lead Thompson as Lupini dropped into the Class B pack at the start. It took Thompson a few laps to deal with the feisty Lambert as Lupini fought back. But Lambert was having none of it. The two of them fought a stunning race-long nose to tail and side by side battle. That while Thompson escaped in front. Lambert ultimately pipped Lupini as they crossed the line side by side. Nair meanwhile held Cloete, Kapp and Marc Thompson off in their own battle.

Kyle Wiltshire’s Class D day was made far simpler when young gun rookies Bishop and Geldenhuys exited stage left in a sizeable turn 3 accident on the second lap. That left Kyle in a healthy lead. It was not over however, as Alfie van Zyl made short work of Nathan Victor and Matthew Rowe and set off after Wiltshire. There were not enough laps to close the gap down, so Wltshire came home first from van Zyl, Victor and Rowe.

With the championship leaders winning the respective classes, the championship remains static. Class C leader Wiltshire heads Class A man Swart and Class B lads Thompson and Lupini overall with Busi fifth. The lockdown re-shaped cheapercars GTi Challenge now takes a pause until the penultimate round mid October races.
