Epic Start to Young Mokoena’s Endurance Racing Career

Former karting sensation, 18 year old Kwanda Mokoena caused a sensation and made a little history at the South African Endurance and GT double header at Aldo Scribante in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The Kyalami lad put his Amandla Coal MJR Racing Audi R8 LMS GT4 on pole position for the 4-hour endurance race, before bringing the car home third overall alongside co-driver Mo Mia. Kwanda also scored a double GT4 class pole position and victory in the sprint races.

“What a perfect way to start my endurance racing career,” a delighted Kwanda reflected post race. “I put the Amandla Coal MJR Audi R8 GT4 on pole position for the PE Four Hour before leading the race for several laps, when one or two quicker cars went ahead. “Unfortunately we made the rookie error of changing tyres at every pit stop, which cost us time and forced us to catch up a few places, but we were back to third by the time the flag fell. “What a feeling!”

“I also raced the car in the two sprint races in the morning. “I put it on pole for the GT4 class and ninth overall, and brought it home to a double class win and ninth on the road in both races. "I am hugely indebted to my team boss Marius Jackson, who has not only made this opportunity possible, but he’s also been a wonderful mentor and coach. “Marius let me drive his faster GT3 spec Audi R8 on Friday and that gave me so much more confidence in my GT4 version.

"After that, I was so much more in sync with the GT4 car and far more comfortable to push the limits and I really loved the night racing too. "That helped me to set a personal best time just two seconds off the GT3 pace, which was also the fastest lap of the race. “Besides Marius, I need to thank my parents and sponsors for making this possible, as well as the Endurance and GT championship guys and my endurance co-driver Mo too.

"Best of all, I'm delighted to be back on top of my driving game again and I can't wait for what comes next. “Bring it on!”
