National championship motorsport returns to Aldo Scribante in Port Elizabeth with a bang at the Volkswagen Extreme Festival this Saturday 28 May. A packed program comprising the country’s leading racers, teams and cars is ready to delight Eastern Province race fans in spectacular style.

Topping the bill, will the upstart young guns continue to unsettle Global Touring Car old school? Pole man last time out, 17-year-old Gazoo Toyota Corolla lad Saood Variawa may have taken the overall win at Zwartkops, but only Chemical Logistics duo, champion Robert Wolk’s Corolla and Mr. Reverse Race, Julian van der Watt’s Ford Focus have won races so far this year. 

Daniel Rowe is the best of the Volkswagen Motorsport Golfs, with Michael van Rooyen’s second Gazoo Corolla looming large from Jonathan Mogotsi's second VW Golf, Andrew Rackstraw’s Investchem RDSA Audi, Mandla Mdakane’s Gazoo Corolla and the luckless Bradley Liebenberg, who will be out to redress in his Hype Energy Golf. There's talk of a GTC Balance of Performance shift looming at Scribante so place your bets — will there be a turn-up for the books…?

Equally spectacular, the GTC SupaCup sees Express Hire rookie Leyton Fourie holding a small title advantage following his maiden win last race. He has race winners Keagan Masters’ Perfect Circle machine and Universal driver Jeffrey Kruger on his case, but don’t ignore Campos brothers Keegan and Jason, or Arnold Neveling, who enjoyed a dream debut at Zwartkops. Top Masters driver, local hero Nick Davidson has papa Rui Campos and Andre Bezuidenhout for company.

Jonathan du Toit’s Lamborghini is the G+H Extreme Supercar favourite, but Greg Parton’s similar car leads the title chase. They have Dayne Angel and Franco Scribante’s mad Porsche GT2s Nicky Dicks and Ant Blunden's GT3s, Mark du Toit’s Ferrari, Ricky Giannoccaro, Damian Hammond and Xolile Letlaka’s Lambos, Gianni Giannoccaro’s Nissan GT-R and Marius Jackson and Kwanda Mokoena’s Audi R8s to deal with. Add Rick and Paulo Lorreiro' BMWs and Ian Riddle’s Alfa GTA.

It’s advantage in Cape Town in the breeding ground of future SA champions Compcare VW Polo GTI Cup. Five points separate Bullion IT lad Jurie Swart, Angri kid Tate Bishop and Universal’s Charl Visser. His teammate Dawie van der Merwe is best of the Jozi drivers ahead of PE local hero Clinton Bezuidenhout and top first year, and another Cape driver, Giordano Lupini. A wildcard entry could however upset that applecart as former champion Lee Thompson returns. Watch this space!

In single-seater action, young guns Antwan Geldenhuys and Josh Le Roux arrive at Scribante fighting for control of Investchem Formula 1600, with the rest of the field out to prevent that from becoming a two-horse race. Brother Gerard Geldenhuys sits in third with F1600 veterans Nic van Weely and Andrew Schofield tied on points in fourth. Watch for young guns Troy Dolinschek, Alex Vos and Jason Coetzee and a field of Formula Ford Kents chasing Ian Schofield behind.

The DOE Formula Vees rejoin the Extreme Festival, where Greg Wilson holds a slender title advantage over Gert van den Berg, with Lushen Ramchander, Lendl Jansen, Peter Hills and Shaun van der Linde in hot pursuit. And on two wheels, Graeme van Breda is fresh off double Sunbet ZX10 Masters Cup victory. He will have Ronald Slamet, Trevor Westman, Jayson Lamb, Brain Bontekoning, Michael Smit, David Enticott and Sanjiv Singh on his case in a packed 30-bile field.

In other action, Ashley Oldfield is the scribe to beat in the Gazoo Toyota Yaris Media Challenge. He'll have Thomas Falkiner, Mark Jones, Sean Nurse, Lerato Matebese and Jeanette Kok-Kritzinger, and Toyota suit, former Group N racer Mario de Souza out to do just that.
