Four Killarney karting wins for Jason
Saturday’s second round WP karting championship races proved a tumultuous weekend for Durbanville lad Jason Coetzee at Killarney. The double South African Junior Max champion won four of the six races he started en route to a dominant Senior Max win for the day, but kart issues put paid to the opening two DD2 heats before Coetzee bounced back to win a wild final race of the day.
“It was an up and down weekend for us,” Jason explained. “We had a brake failure when I was flat out in the first DD2 race while sitting in second and I slammed into the tyre barrier. “They stopped the race to rescue me, but the kart was undrivable so I was out. “I hurt my foot a little in the crash but I dusted myself off and had a brilliant first race in Senior Max — we really had a good weekend there with my SAKRA Kosmic — we won all three races and the day overall too.
“The team did a great job to get my EMR Extreme CRG ready for the second DD2 race, but a gear cable sheared on track and could not change gears, so I was forced to retire again. “Happily the third race went much better - I had just passed Jono Thomas for third, when the guys in front of me tangled and I found myself in the lead and won the race! “It was a sweet end to a tough DD2 day.
“I need to thank Ed Murray Racing, the South African Kart Racing Academy, Wes, Cleopas Mbawa, Umpie Swart, Jurie Swart Senior and my mom and dad for the help and support over the weekend. “We head to KZN next for the first round of the SA Nationals at iDube — I think we have a strong team with Umpie and me in the EMR Extreme CRG team in DD2 and I am really looking forward to Senior Max with my SAKRA Kosmic — bring it on!
