Van der Watt satisfied with progress

Julian van der Watt was happy with his progress in the third round of Western Province Karting Championship races at Killarney at the weekend — the Cape Town driver ended up a strong second despite swapping to an untested brand new chassis for the first time.

“We ran this weekend with our new CRG chassis — a change up from my faithful Zanardi,” Julian explained. “But it rained on Thursday so we only did 3 sessions on Friday to shake down, bed in and set the chassis up so we knew it would be a challenging and learning weekend with the chassis.

“So I was quite happy to be very close to Umpie Swart who was the quickest guy in DD2 this weekend - we need more time to find the best from the CRG and finding a setup for Saturday, so to end up second for the day and getting the fastest time in race 1 was a boost. “We need to go testing to figure out the chassis better but we are confident that we will be right up there for the national at the end of April - I am keen to repeat last year’s win there and we will be ready - bring it on.”

Julian however has an appointment at Kyalami on 22 April, where he will race the second round of the Investchem SA Formula 1600 championship he leads following a dominant start to the season at Killarney two weeks back.
