Alibhai enjoys a great day at the races

Ten-year old Aqil Alibhai returned home to Johannesburg well satisfied following a wild double duty karting weekend at Killarney’s Cape round of the 2017 SA Karting Championship. The Ormonde lad raced in both the primary school Maxterino and Mini Max classes, which kept him more than busy throughout the day.

“I had a great weekend with some awesome results,” Aqil pointed out. “Competition was tough and there were times when I led the races, but most of all I was in the fight for the win in most of my heats.

"Maxterino was wild! "I qualified very well in second and diced with Troy Dolinschek and Denis Joubert for second before Troy got away and Denis came back to pip me at the post in the first race. “The second race was mad — I was dicing with Tate Bishop for second when the red flag came out and then I had to fight back from fifth on the restart and I ended up second there too and got second for the combined race too.

“The Maxterino final was awesome — I started fourth and fought up to lead the race, but Tate got past me and then we had a wild final lap, where Troy and Jordan Brooks got the better of me so I ended up fourth in the race, but I was very happy to end up second overall for the day in a most competitive class.

"I qualified fourth for Mini Max and had a lonely first few laps until I caught Kai van Zijl and then passed him, which allowed Leyton Fourie to catch me so I had to fight him off to take third. "I started fifth in Race 2, but ended up going wide and dropped to ninth, so I had to fight back hard to end up fifth again. “The Mini final was another mad race - I had qualified third and had a huge dice with Kai, Tate and Jarrod Waberski and ended up fifth in the race and fifth for the day.

“It was a great weekend’s racing in all — thanks to RKT for their endless support — now we are looking forward to great season ahead!”
