Alibhai turns UK experience into SA wins
Johannesburg karting kid Aqil Alibhai turned his hard-earned experience from his sojourn racing season in England into a dominant race winning performance in the weekend’s third round Northern Regions races at a soaking Vereeniging Laserfiche Raceway over the weekend. Alibhai learned all about racing in the wet in Blighty and it paid off and then some with a dominant showing in under-12 Maxterino, while he also steered to third in under-14 Mini Max.
“That was just a perfect weekend for me,” Ormonde lad Aqil smiled. “Firstly I love the rain because I learned so much about racing in the wet when I raced in Britain and Europe last year, where it pretty much rains all the time. “We used a similar set-up on my karts to what worked well for us back then and then I just kept it on the black stuff. “That was key for the day and I did just that and I am delighted with the results — a win and a third in my two classes — what more could I ask for?
Aqil now heads to Cape Town for the Mini Rok National at Killarney this weekend. “I’m looking to forward to another weekend in the Cape and they say they need the rain — I really don’t mind if it pours again all weekend!”
