HRSA heads to the mieliefields

Fresh from all the excitement of the recent Festival of Speed, Historic Racing South Africa and the Historic City will set up camp for a proper weekend of classic car racing at the Red Star Raceway in the middle of the mielies near Delmas Saturday 7 March. The second round of the championship can be expected to dish up more great racing between the HRCR Pre-90 Sports & GTs and Universal Healthcare HRSA Pre-81 Saloons, while the Charlies SuperSpar HRSA Pursuit race will deliver its own special spectacle.

The Sports & GT grid comprises a splendid assortment of racing Porsche Carrera RSRs as George Avvakoumides (Ocean Basket) takes on Stefan Snyders (Steton), Richard Pott and Andre van der Merwe (Evapco), with Rey Cornelissen running interference in his Glashoff Maughan TVR Tuscan. They will have their hands full with the leading Universal Pre-81s including Johann Smith (SPS Mazda Capella) and Class D racers, Alan Green’s Meissner Ford Escort, VW Scirocco trio Stuart Konig (Nothern Bolt), Jannie van Rooyen and Andre ten Napel (TNMC) and Johann Barnard (Industrial & Mining Capri).

Behind them, the smaller class action is always epic between Class E racers Ian Kilburn (Collectible Wheels) Datsun GX Coupe, Rene van Rensburg (SV Tech Escort) and Scirocco pair Fred Konig (Northern Bolt) and Riaan Roux (Addfin), with Class F four, 2019 Pre-81 champion Sean Hepburn (HiQ Midrand Datsun 1200 Deluxe), Hubi von Moltke (Mercedes 280) Cindy Evans-Finney (Hempro Jodest Renault R8) and Jaco Roux (Addfin Scirocco) in hot pursuit. Jan Jacobs (Olifantsfontein Alfa Junior), Kobus Brits (Datsun SSS) and Riaan de Ru (Vestige Ford Prefect) will meanwhile scrap in Class G.

A most enjoyable class to watch, the Charlies SuperSpar Pursuit series races on handicap, with the slowest cars starting first and the fastest last and their ideal race times designed to see them all finish at once. So what seems to start as a bit of a procession soon builds up to a grandstand finish as the faster cars close in and the slower ones try defend their advantage without breaking out of their own handicap lap time limits. All quite thrilling, actually!

This here are two Pursuit classes, the Fine Cars, which are basically standard road legal cars with full interiors and limited modifications. The Fines ruled the roost last time when the slowest car out there, Robert Clark’s Sarel van der Merwe tribute Containerforce Citroen GS 1220 Club kept ahead as it listed and leaned to overall victory over dbm Architects father and son duo Wynands du Plessis Junior (Toyota MR 2) and Senior (Porsche 944).

That trio will also have to deal with Brad Schafer in another 944, Mercedes trio Richard Tudor-Owen (Flower Pal), Andre Hattingh (Hattingh Motors) and Machiel Oberholzer (Aquaperm), Bert (Lotus Elite) and Lauren van Aarle (Ace Auto Salvage Escort), Henk de Klerk (Pajero Maintenance Honda Civic) and Datsun-Nissan trio, Althea Pretorius (Carinvest Exa), Michelle Smith (SPS Skyline) and Frans Venter (280ZX).

The other Pursuit class comprises the Trophy racers competing in race spec cars usually from Pre 80 saloons not faster than the class E breakout time. There Porsche trio, 2019 champion Wernher Hartzenberg (Aircooled Wonders 916), Clive Winterstein (Casheri 356A) and Tihan van Rooyen (924), Willem van Niekerk in his once SA-built Marauder and Rydawi MG duo, Rikus Botha (BGT) and William Kelly (Midget) take on Datsun SSS duo Rob van Aarle (Ace Auto), Kobus Brits (The Wife), Jose Vasques (Mercedes CE), Riaan Roux (Addfin Scirocco) and Hilton Ewart (ATS Alfetta).

The new HRSA Historic City comprises a dedicated paddock and pit area to the benefit Members a convenient private grandstand, refreshment marquee and entertainment area at the track.
