KZN & EP karting thrills over the weekend

The Rotax Max Challenge Karting season moved into top gear over the weekend with a round of each of the KwaZulu Natal and EP and Border regionals each going down at iDube and East London.

A star-studded iDube DD2 race saw Robert Whiting take advantage of race 1 and 2 winner Cristiano Morgado’s final woes to pip his rival to the post overall with Sharad Bantho third from Brandon Smith, Divan Braak and Brent Walden.  Jonathan Pieterse beat Richard Van Heerde two races to one to take DD2 Masters honours from Ryan Wilde, Shane Foley, Eric Marzoppi and Alistair Mingay.

Brent Walden took two wins en route to Senior Max honours over Riley Horner and race 3 winner Shrien Naidoo, Brandon Smith, Jack Rowe and Jadice Govender, while Richard Van Heerde took a couple of Max Masters wins to defeat Shane Foley, race 3 winner Richard Horner, Dean Rice, Beverly van Heerde and Peter-John Garbutt.

In schoolboy action, Troy Snyman was in fine form as he stormed to a triple under-15 Junior Max win over Dhivyen Naidoo, Liam De Beer, Juandre Nel, Nikheil Kulkaparsad and Yifan Li, while also trotting off to another under-13 Micro Max triple over Guido Bidoli. Travis Mingay scored a couple of under-11 Micro Max wins to take the day from heat 2 winner Uzair Khan, Rayn Asmal and Hriday Pooren and Harry Rowe made no mistakes with a trip of baby Bambino wins, while Shuttleworth and Rafael Da Silva shared the seconds to end up ahead of Kian Snyman.

East London meanwhile hosted a round of the Rotax Max EP and Border Championships, where Geoff Stephen took a trio of DD2 wins over Byron Teengs and a troubled Brett Brito. Lincoln Randall took two under-11 Micro Max wins to take the day from Aiden Green and heat 3 winner Tyler Stephen, with Joshua Moore, Scott Heidman and Taygan Roets next up. Caleb Moss trotted off to a trio of baby Bambino wins from Jack Moore, Traiton Boshoff and Arabelle Krause each time, while Jason Du Preez and Michel Breiner shared out the fifth and sixth places.

In East London Clubmans action, Kayden Croucamp and Kyle Heidman shared the Junior wins ahead of Timothy Ball, while East London saloon car racer Brady Choudree took three Senior races to take the day from Ryan Gudmanz and Jaques du Preez and Geoff Stephen was back at it to take a trio of Masters Clubman wins from Leeroy Randall and Greg Thompson.

There is a Western Cape regional round at Killarney Saturday 14 March before Rotax Max limbers up for the opening round of the SA National Championship when SA's finest karters come together at iDube at the end of the month - be there!
