Double African Open victory and a ticket to the Grand Finals

Pietermaritzburg karting sensation troy Snyman bounced back from the toughest year of his career to deliver a unique double victory at the weekend’s African Open at Benoni’s Formula K Raceway. Not only did Snyman score a clean sweep of four victories in four sets of races he drove through Saturday’s Northern Regions races and Sunday’s Open, but he also delivered a unique Open result.

“Only one other driver has ever won two classes at the African Open before,” Troy explained. The Pietermaritzburg flyer is still able to compete in under-13 Mini Max, but he also raced and won in under-15 Junior Max to clinch a wildcard seat in the South African Rotax Max ‘Olympics of Karting’ Grand Finals team. “We had a super weekend all-round and I came home with the winners trophies in Mini and Junior Max, as well as a berth in the Junior Max Grand Final team!

“I am really happy to be going back to the Grand Finals after such a difficult year on track — things never went our way until this weekend, but it all came right at Formula K.” Troy proved the sensation in last year’s Mini Max Grand Finals only to be taken out of the lead dice on the final lap. “Now we go there with the benefit of hindsight in my first year of Junior Max — I am going to give it my very best and do my team and South Africa proud at the Grand Finals.

“Thanks so much to Ralph Odendaal and Henry at Punjabi for their engine and kart set-up and to my amazing mom and dad — I really could not to it without any of them.” January will be very busy for Troy, who will embark on realising another dream earlier in the month. “Our climbing club is finally going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro after lockdown delayed that too,” Troy explained. “It’s going to be a hectic start to the year with the Grand Final on top of that, but I can’t wait!"
