Single seaters set for Killarney showdown

It’s all to play for as the Investchem Formula 1600 heads to Cape Town’s Killarney International Raceway for its penultimate sixth round at the National Extreme Festival races on Saturday 17 September. South Africa’s premier single seater racing championship sits poised on a knife’s edge with just four heats left to run, two of them at Killarney, where local heroes can be expected to turn the expected running order on its head.

Long-time championship leader Josh Le Roux fought has endured a tough couple of weekends aboard his Investchem RDSA Mygale. That’s allowed Gerard Geldenhuys’ Abacus Divisions Mygale to whittle his title advantage down to just six points with two wins and two podiums versus Josh’s single win and a third over those four heats. Brother Antwan Geldenhuys sits third in the chase, a further nine points adrift in the second Abacus Divisions Mygale, with the ever-improving Alex Vos’ DVBS Investchem Mygale close behind in fourth.

It's behind those five Gauteng racers however, where the real interest lies for Killarney race fans on Saturday. Cape lad Troy Dolinschek took a fine maiden win and a second place in his Sujean Mygale last time out. Troy is a Killarney expert, so his progress will be closely observed by his hometown faithful. Dolinschek’s great last race weekend moved him ahead of Formula 1600 veterans, Andrew Schofield’s Safair Investchem Mygale and Nicholas van Weely’s Magnificent Paints & Hardware Van Diemen on the title log.

Another local driver likely to benefit great Killarney hometown knowledge, is Jason Coetzee. He’s certainly due a break following a tough rookie campaign in his Mint Wrap Works Mygale. Also keep a look out for Jason’s Cape compatriot Storm Lanfear as he gets to grips with his rookie main circuit season, Namibian lad Siya Mankonkwana’s Investchem Mygale and young Jozi lady racer Taya van der Laan’s Macrocomm Mygale. It remains to be seen if Ewan Holtzhausen will be back in action following his scary Eat London accident last time out in his Total Plastics Mygale.

Investchem Formula 1600 races as part of a full National Extreme Festival meeting at Killarney on Saturday 6 August.
