Broad variety entertains Free State race fans
A cracking Regional Festival entertained Free State race fans with a great day of Phakisa 200 races at Welkom’s Phakisa Freeway on Saturday.
The highlights of the day were combined Car Care Clinic 111 and Superhatch sprint and 200 km endurance races. Adrian Dalton took the 200 win in his Golf 1, well clear of 111 Class A duo Wouter Roos and Graeme Nathan’s Golf GTI 6, 111 B winner Roland Hopkins, top 111 GT finisher Johan van der Vyver’s Subaru and earlier leader Phillip Meyer’s Porsche.
Top Superhatch crew Andre Dannhauser and Brett Garland’s Class A Corsa were next home from Class B crews Donavan le Roux and JP Nortje and Christiaan van Wyk, and Adriaan Vermaak. Francis and George Aldrich took Suparhatch Class C from Devon Piazza-Musso.
111 A trio, Phillip Meyer’s Porsche, Piet Potgieter and Dalton topped the earlier sprint race. Hopkins won 111 B, van der Vyver GT and Maritz le Roux C, Michael Grobler D and Gavin and Dean Ross Class E. Dannhauser won Superhatch from Lenard Archer, while ladies, Melanie Spurr and Elna Croeser won B and Piazza Musso took Class C.
The Pabar Gauteng VW Challenge saw a championship shake-up. Class A leader Rory Atkinson moved to the top of the log after he and top Class C driver, Ian Walker enjoyed perfect grand slam weekends. Class B youngster Anthony Pretorius took a maiden double victory, while that class leader Hannes Scheepers endured an off day
Overall, Atkinson beat Wayne and Bevan Masters, Sam Dale, Derik Smalberger and Chris Dale in Class A. Pretorius took Class B from Bevan Williams, Charise van der Merwe, Elana Croeser, and newcomer Yotti Nousias. And Walker took Class C from Andy Gossman and Philip Croeser.
Thomas Falkiner benefited Jeffrey Kruger hitting trouble after leading the first few laps to lead Rudi Barnard, Andre Human, Kruger, JP Nortje and David Coetzee home and take the first Lotus Challenge race. Falkiner went on to do the double from Barnard, Kruger, Human and Nortje. Sean Hepburn beat Andre du Plessis and Davide Favo to both Locost wins.
Peter Hills extended his unbeaten DOE Formula Vee winning streak to four races in a row. He beat Lendl Jansen, Gert van den Berg, son Vaughn Hills, Theodore Vermaak and Shaun van der Linde to race 1. Grandpa Peter went on to do the Phakisa double over Jansen, van den Berg, sons Vaughn and Brandon Hills and van der Linde in the restarted race 2.
Class A man Arrie van der Berg held Class B winner Andreas Meier, Leon Loubser and Class B trio Carlo Garbini, Rick Loureiro and Jagger Robertson off to win the opening BMW M Performance Parts race. Renier Smith beat Dewit Oosthuizen to Class C, Shane Grobler won D from Jaco Storm, and Dave Rehse took Class E from Nicholas Fischer.
William Einkamerer beat Fabio Fedetto to race 2, while Renier Smith took Class C from Dewit Oosthuizen and Troy Cochran, Storm beat Craig Herbst in D and Bertie Rietveld beat Rehse to Class E. The Class B result remains in abeyance subject to official ratification.
Sportscar winner Pieter Zeelie beat On Track Clubmans man Dirk Lawrence’s Honda to that opening combined class race. Tjaart Visser’s Ballade took Class D, Johan Labuschagne’s Subaru E and Fred Kruger’s Golf F. Zeelie beat Lawrence to the race 2 win, with D winner Eugene Gouws’ Can Am third. Labuschagne and Kruger repeated their class wins.
The Regional Festival returns to action at the Red Star Raceway’s penultimate round races on Saturday 8 October.
