Alibhai's Ginetta Junior season starts Saturday

South African karting graduate Aqil Alibhai will step straight into an international car racing career in the 2021 British Ginetta Junior Championship starting at Thruxton, England over this 8-9 May weekend. Alibhai, who starred in the Ginetta Junior Scholarship Academy in December, was snapped up to drive one of Team Breakell’s new Ginettas in the same series that propelled McLaren star Lando Norris to his Formula 1 career.

“I am all wired up and super excited as I count down the sleeps to go before my first race this weekend!” Aqil admitted. “We've been in England testing over the past few weeks — it was awesome to be back behind the wheel again and we enjoyed a great few days preparing for the upcoming Ginetta Junior Championship 2021. “I am super excited to be here!

“I will be racing for Breakell Racing. “The team noticed my progress in the Ginetta Academy shootout in December and offered me the drive. “Now I can’t wait to finally get down to race a car for the first time in anger! “I’m ready to do my utmost for my new team and look forward to learning and driving fast!"

The Ginetta Junior Championship racing on the British Touring Car support bill, taking in all the great British circuits in a 25 round series that sees Aqil racing in the separate Rookie class. The series enjoys Ginetta Cars’ full parts and technical support and is run to tight technical controls to ensure a level playing field, with testing and tyre restrictions to keep control on budgets.

Breakell Racing has enjoyed success across a broad variety of circuit racing formulae and Aqil is no stranger to racing in the UK — he spent a season racing karts there in 2015 before making a mark in South African karting. Double Rotax Junior Max African Open Champion, Aqil twice represented South Africa in the Rotax Max ‘Olympics of Karting' Grand Finals, as well as the Rok Cup Superfinal.
