Rory dominates SupaCup, Tait impresses in Astron Energy Polo Cup
Volkswagen Motorsport’s Rory Atkinson delivered a delightful maiden double victory in the Red Star Raceway’s SATC SupaCup races, while teammate Christopher Tait impressed in the Astron Energy Polo Cup races at the second round National Extreme Festival on Saturday.
“If Saturday was anything to go by, our Volkswagen Motorsport stairway of talent is clearly once again paying great dividends,” Mike Rowe, Volkswagen Head of Motorsport explains. “We promoted our Astron Energy Polo Cup champion Rory Atkinson to our factory SATC SupaCup car. Second at Killarney on debut, Rory dominated at Red Star this weekend. Likewise, our Volkswagen Rookie Cup champion Christopher Tait is racing for Volkswagen Motorsport in the 30th Anniversary Astron Energy Polo Cup, where he delivered great results on Saturday.”
Atkinson initially qualified third for Saturday’s opening SATC SupaCup race, but both of the cars ahead of him were penalised and sent to the back. “I suppose we were a little lucky to end up on pole position, but I took that opportunity with both hands to deliver my maiden SATC SupaCup victory and then we doubled up in race 2. It’s been a brilliant start to the season, but I could never have done that on my own and I must thank the team for an incredible car and wonderful support.”
Tait made great gains since his debut to qualify eighth, where he finished in race 1 before losing out on a race 2 top six in a fraught final lap scrap. “I was much more comfortable this weekend and we had better results,” Christopher admitted. “I was close to making Superpole in eighth and that first race was wild, so I was happy with solid points. We made more progress in race 2 where I lost sixth fair and square on the last lap. Still, seventh is a landmark, so onward and upward. Thanks team!”
“Now we head to Zwartkops Raceway for round 3 on 23 May,” Mike Rowe concludes. “That’s Volkswagen Motorsport’s Gauteng base and it has always been a happy hunting ground, so here’s to much more of that up in Pretoria!”
