Troy gains valuable experience through wild and wet weekend

Pietermaritzburg’s Rotax Junior Max African Open karting champion Troy Snyman delivered a podium finish in his final at the weekend’s International Trophy in Portimao, Portugal. Snyman, who used the event as a warm-up for the Rotax Max Grand Finals ‘Olympics of Karting’ at the same circuit in January, overcame a bruising weekend's racing to come home second in that wild finale.

“We went to Portugal to gain experience and prepare for the Grand Finals,” Troy  explained. “And we certainly got some proper experience! “Not only did it pour with rain for most of the week, but it was cold too and I struggled to come to terms with those Europeans winter conditions. Never mind some of those drivers are bonkers — we were racing against some of the toughest and most aggressive Junior Max champions from all over the world.

“Anyway, there was lots of argy bargy, spin offs and nose cone penalties and I had my fair share of those. It was all good though, as it taught me better driving skills and how to stay in front of a far bigger and more aggressive pack too. I qualified fourth for the B final after all that and that race was wild. At least it was dry, but I was held up at the start and had to fight my way to the front and led a few laps.

"The last lap was mad and I ended up second. It was a really proud moment to stand on an international podium under the South African flag! Most important is that we learned a lot and my pace was good this weekend. We will carry that experience forward to the Grand Finals, so it was a positive trip. Special thanks to my team, MKC Racing and my folks who are always here to support. See you at the Grand Finals!”
