Second round South African Championships at Blockbuster Festival
The 2024 South African National Championship Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola moves on to its second appointment at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit 12 April Blockbuster weekend. With a full complement of National car racing classes backed by top Gauteng Regional Festival races, fans are in for a huge treat at the iconic Johannesburg racetrack.
Focussing on the National action, perhaps the biggest news at Kyalami are the first ever Investchem MSA4 races, where fourteen brand new Volkswagen powered wings and slicks single seaters take to the track for the very first time. In the most exciting South African single seater racing news in a while, expect KC Ensor-Smith, Shrien Naidoo, Karabo Malemela and Alex Vos to mix it up with veteran wildcard Rick Morris up front on the new series debut weekend.
Always good for a proper dose of adrenaline, the Extreme Supercars driven by Dunlop will be all about who can beat rookie Brad Liebenberg’s Audi R8 after his triumphant arrival at the previous round down in the Cape. Rest assured that Charl Arangies’ all-new Porsche 911 GT3, Jonathan du Toit’s Lamborghini Huracan, Kris Budnik’s Viper and a grid full of the most extreme supercars, will be out to do precisely that and beat the red Audi at Kyalami.
There’s a huge shake up in South African Touring Cars where log leader Anthony Pretorius has left to race abroad, leaving SupaCup graduate Keegan Campos to pick up the reins in his BMW alongside Andy Schofield’s similar car. In other Touring Car news, former champion Saood Variawa and Nathi Msimanga both make a comeback alongside debutant Siya Mankonkwana and veteran Michael van Rooyen in the Toyotas, up against Julian van der Watt and rookie Jagger Robertson in two VW Golf GTIs.
Volkswagen duo, champion Jonathan Mogotsi and rookie Jason Loosemore and Toyota lad Dawie van der Merwe will be out for SATC SupaCup revenge after they were all shown a clean pair of heels by Cape SupaPolo home heroes, Tate Bishop and Charl Michael Visser last time out. A large Astron Energy Polo Cup grid will see journeymen Mo Karodia and Ethan Coetzee fending off the likes of Rory Atkinson, Shiren Rajpaul, Hannes Scheepers and lady racer Tyler Robinson, while Wayne Masters, John Kruger and Derick Smalberger should be the over-50 men fighting in the Astron Polo Masters.
The Toyota Gazoo Racing Cup concludes the Kyalami National Extreme Festival Blockbuster lineup with Jason Coetzee the kid to beat among the GR86 Rookies, Devon Scott the form man in the Dealer GR Corollas and Nabil Abdool, the top Media GR Yaris dog. The National classes will be backed by top regional categories, the thundering Dunlop V8 Supercars, BMW M Performance Parts Race Series, ATE VW Challenge, DOE Formula Vee and Ferro Energia 111 with SuperHatch. With practice Thursday and Friday, qualifying Friday afternoon and wall to wall racing and entertainment all day Saturday, the Blockbuster Extreme Festival promises a thrilling day of racing action. See you at Kyalami!”
